
Three Mountain Hawks ready to run at NCAA East Prelims beginning Thursday in Florida

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three members of the Lehigh track and field program will be competing in the East Preliminary round of the NCAA Championships, Thursday-Saturday at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Junior Kip Yegon will compete in the 3000m steeplechase for the second consecutive year. Senior Clare Severe and sophomore Sean Brown will compete in the 1500m.
All participants in Jacksonville this weekend rank as the top 48 of each event in the NCAA's East Region. The top 12 placers in each event this weekend will qualify for the final round of the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas on June 5-8, where they will be joined by the top 12 placers from this weekend's West Region preliminary action in Sacramento, Calif.
Severe and Brown will be the first Mountain Hawks on the track Thursday evening. The first round of the women's 1500m is set for 5:30 p.m. with the men's 1500m to follow at 6 p.m. Of the 48 competitors in the 1500, the top 24, the top five in each of four heats plus the next four fastest times overall, will qualify for the quarterfinals Saturday at 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. The top five in each of two quarterfinal heats plus the next two fastest times will move on to Austin.
Yegon will close out Friday night's second day of competition with the 3000m steeplechase at 9 p.m. There will be three heats, with the top three in each heat plus the next three fastest times moving on to the NCAA Championships.
Live results will be available for all events and the entire meet will be streamed live online as part of FloTrack.org's subscription-based service.
Yegon ranks 18th in the East Region with his personal best time of 8:53.36, which earned him an IC4A title back on May 11. This will be Yegon's sixth appearance in the steeplechase this spring. He finished seventh at the Patriot League Championship in the event. Yegon's second-best time of this outdoor season came at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton on April 20 when he finished fifth with a time of 9:02.33. Last year, Yegon won a Patriot League title in the steeplechase, finished fifth at IC4As and then took 37th in the East Regional at USF.
Severe will make her first NCAA first round appearance ranked No. 46 in the 1500m with a time of 4:22.78. Her outdoor season began with a school record in the 1500m at the Raleigh Relays (4:28.32) and then broke her own record April 14 at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Severe, who finished second in the 800m and the mile at the Patriot League Championship during the indoor season, finished third in the 1500m at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship and the 20th at ECACs.
Brown enters his first NCAA first round meet on the strength of his school-record time of 3:45.72, set on May 4 when he captured the Patriot League title in the 1500m. He ranks 38th in the East Region. Brown opened his outdoor season by running 3:52.76 in the 1500 at the Raleigh Relays. He also ran the 1500 at the Bison Outdoor Classic and the Larry Ellis Invitational. Last time out, Brown earned All-East recognition with an eighth place finish at IC4As.
Last year Lehigh had three first round qualifiers. The last time Lehigh had athletes qualify for the final round of the NCAA Championships was in 2017 when Courtney Avery earned first team All-America honors with a sixth place finish in the high jump, and Lucas Warning was a second team All-American with a 10th place finish in the shot put.
