Mountain Hawks edged by Lafayette in annual outdoor dual meet

EASTON, Pa. — A strong showing from Lafayette proved to be too much for the Mountain Hawks to recover from as Lehigh's men's track and field team lost the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet 107-96.

"Lafayette is going to be a team that's going to be opportunistic," Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said. "When they see an opening, they're certainly going to take it, that's what makes the rivalry great. We need to not take our recent past for granted and need to show up to every meet every time and put them away and we didn't do that today."

Junior Kyle Sult had a strong individual performance for the Mountain Hawks, winning the javelin with a 52.85m mark and earning top five finishes in the pole vault and 110m hurdles. In the pole vault, Sult earned a 4.10m mark, good for third place.

"I think Kyle Sult laid it all on the line today," Utesch said. "He was in a lot of events which is typical of our multi guys. He vaulted really well, he won the javelin so I thought he did a great job."

Senior Max Jordan won the pole vault event with a mark of 4.40m. Junior Joseph Kelly also earned a 4.40m mark, finishing in second place.

"It was great for Max (Jordan), who was the male athlete of the meet," Utesch said. "He, Joey (Kelly) and Kyle (Sult) all vaulted really well, but I think it's nice that Max (Jordan) got to be the athlete of the meet."

Sophomore Michael Mitchell finished first overall in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:36.35. In the 100m dash, sophomore Matt Solomon earned the top spot, finishing with a time of 11.10. Fellow sophomore Sean Brown earned first place in the 800m with a time of 1:51.97.

In the 400m hurdles, sophomore Evan El-Halawani finished first overall with a time of 54.27. Junior Kip Yegon finished first in the 5K with a time of 15:17.88.

Senior Alexander Rodgers finished second overall in the shot put with a 14.14m throw.

The Mountain Hawks are back in action next weekend with three meets: the Mondschein Multi at Kutztown, the Coach Pollard Invitational at Moravian and Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic.
