BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Lehigh team captain and Lehigh Valley native Brett Snyder '00 passed away Sunday evening, following a 16-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Snyder was a standout at Northwestern Lehigh high school before coming to Lehigh where he was a key contributor to Lehigh's Patriot League championship teams in the late 1990s.
A four-year starter at fullback, Snyder rushed for 371 yards and three touchdowns in his Lehigh career, while averaging four yards per carry. He was also an effective receiver out of the backfield, with 73 career catches for 816 yards and nine touchdowns.
Snyder was a member of Lehigh's 1998 Patriot League championship team and returned to Goodman Stadium to be honored with his teammates last October for that team's 20th anniversary. He also served as a team captain on Lehigh's 1999 Patriot League championship team.
"Brett was the consummate teammate, scholar and athlete," said Lehigh Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett '76. "He was and will always be the epitome of a 'team-first' guy, whose values and actions were admired by everyone. This is a sad day for the Lehigh community upon which he made such a big impact. Our hearts and prayers are with the entire Snyder family."
The New Tripoli, Pa., native graduated from Lehigh in 2000 with a degree in mechanical engineering and spent 13 years working as an Engineer after graduation.
