BETHLEHEM, Pa— The Lehigh men's track and field team wrapped up a full weekend of competition, having traveled to three meets Friday-Saturday.
A contingent of Mountain Hawks traveled to the Fred Harvey Invitational, hosted by the University of Richmond.
Junior Ryan Paradise finished third overall in the 1500m, earning a time of 4:00.18. Junior David Fletcher finished in 4:04.53, good for sixth overall.
In the 5000m, sophomore Brad DeMassa earned a first place finish with a time of 14:59.01. Fellow sophomore Michael Mitchell finished second, earning a time of 15:03.51.
"Them going one-two is a great confidence booster," coach Matt Utesch said. "That's awesome for both of those guys."
Sophomore Evan El-Halawani finished third overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55:88. Freshman Michael Nardelli finished eighth with a time of 58.06. Freshman Matthew Fisher rounded out the top ten, finishing in 1:01.38 which earned him tenth place.
In the 3000m steeplechase, the Mountain Hawks took the top two slots. Sophomore Seth Slavin finished first overall with a time of 9:37.05, while sophomore Nick Norton earned second with a time of 9:38.13.
"Slavin did a great job," Utesch said. "He led that race the whole way. A great opportunity for him to come out and be really successful early in the season."
In the throws, sophomore Anastasios Mouzakis finished second overall in the hammer throw, earning a mark of 50.02. Senior Alexander Rodgers finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 13.43m. Junior Kyle Sult earned a second place finish in the javelin, earning a 54.62 mark.
"Kyle's a decathlete, so the javelin is not his primary event," Utesh said. "To have him place that high and throw solid two weeks in a row is really good for the future."
Junior Adam Freesman earned two personal records in the hammer throw (47.12m) and the shot put (12.68).
Lehigh took the top two spots in the pole vault, with junior Joey Kelly finishing first with a 4.85m mark while senior Max Jordan earned second with a 5.44m mark. Both Kelly and Jordan earned personal records in the event, with Kelly earning an IC4A-qualifying mark.
"That's as good as it gets," Utesch said. "Those were the only two guys we had entered in the event, they both PR'ed and they finished first and second. There's nothing better than that."
The Mountain Hawks also traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, Friday for the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University.
Sophomore Kip Yegon finished the 3000m steeplechase in 33rd place, earning a time of 9:16.99.
"That was a great early season race for him, but the last 1000 revealed a part of the race we have to work on," Utsech said.
In the 1500m, sophomore Sean Brown finished 41st overall with a time of 3:52.76. Freshman Kyle Burke finished the event 80th overall with a time of 3:57.07.
"Really good race for the freshman Kyle Burke," Utesh said. "He held his own against a quality field. Sean Brown is poised for a really strong season."
At the Lafayette 7-Way Invitational on Saturday, freshman Ethan Koza finished the 5000m second overall, earning a time of 15:41.98.
"It's too bad that he got leaned at the line, but it's always a good lesson to run from the front for him," Utsesh said.
Also in the 200m dash, freshman Carter Schmalzle finished 16th overall with a time of 24.64. Schmalzle also came in 16th in the 400m with a time of 54.89. Also in the 400m, freshman Harrison Earnst finished 11th overall with a time of 52.86.
Lehigh will travel to Lafayette on Saturday, April 6 for the annual outdoor dual meet at Metzgar Fields.
