BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After two trips to Florida, the Lehigh men's golf team will play its first spring event in the northeast when the Mountain Hawks make the short trip to Hellertown to play in Lafayette's Intercollegiate Tournament, which will take place Sunday and Monday at the Steel Club.
Lehigh and Lafayette will be two of 19 teams competing on the par 72 course, which serves as Lafayette's home course. Lafayette's tournament has been a mainstay on Lehigh's spring schedule in a similar way to how the Leopards are regulars at the October Lehigh Invitational.
So far this spring the Mountain Hawks have competed at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate in Palm City, Florida and the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in Howey-in-the-Hills. Senior Lee Hammerschmidt had one of his best tournaments as a Mountain Hawk at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, leading Lehigh with a score of 228 that included a 73 and 74 in his final two rounds.
Lehigh's scoring team will once again include Hammerschmidt, juniors Owen Quinn and Ryan Kelly, seniors Max Redetzke and Eamon Marone and freshman Michael Tanaka. Five of those six will comprise Lehigh's scoring team with the sixth man competing as an individual.
Kelly tied for 15th at Lafayette's Invitational last year with a score of 148, while Quinn shot 150 and tied for 22nd. Lehigh used a balanced team effort to finish second, two strokes behind Rhode Island, in a 16-team field.
In addition to Lehigh and Lafayette, this year's field includes Binghamton, Bryant, Bucknell, Canisius, Colgate, Fordham, Hofstra, Holy Cross, Iona, Monmouth, Navy, Niagara, Rider, Robert Morris, Saint Peter's, Siena and Villanova.
Sunday's opening round will feature a shotgun start beginning at 1:30 p.m. Tee times for Monday's final round will begin at 9 a.m. Lafayette will offer live scoring on Golfstat.com.
Following the Lafayette Invitational, Lehigh will play in Villanova's Wildcat Invitational, April 8-9 in Malvern, Pa.
