PRINCETON, N.J. – In its first official competition of the 2019-20 season, 27 members of the Lehigh wrestling team competed at the Princeton Open Sunday at Jadwin Gym. Twenty-two Mountain Hawks competed attached, while five members of Lehigh's true freshman class competed unattached.
Sophomore Jaret Lane led the way for Lehigh, going 4-0 to win the 133 pound title. Lane was one of 13 Mountain Hawks to claim top six places in their respective weight classes.
"It was good to see the guys competing," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We made some mistakes that we'll need to fix, but overall it was good having everyone out there. We lost some tough matches. We may have given some away. We beat ourselves in a couple of matches. We just need to dial in and stay focused for the whole match. They are things that can be fixed. We just need to improve our focus.
Lane's tournament included three bonus wins and two falls. After a major decision over Army's Ryan Hetrick in the semifinals, Lane pinned Richie Koehler in 3:28 to claim the title. Lane finished sixth at 125 in last year's Princeton Open.
"Jaret kept gaining confidence throughout the tournament," Santoro said. "He kept getting better, which was good to see. He looked like he was having fun. He was trying lots of different things which is good to see."
Senior Chase Gallik also reached the finals, winning his first four bouts at 165 with three pins and a 5-3 decision over teammate Brian Meyer, but dropped his finals match 11-5 to Ricky Stamm of Hofstra. Meyer finished fourth in the same bracket as semifinal losers dropped straight to the 3rd/4th place bout.
Four Mountain Hawks finished third in their respective weight classes, a group that includes senior Ryan Pomrinca (141), sophomore Jimmy Hoffman (149) junior Chris Weiler (184) and junior Jake Jakobsen (197).
Pomrinca bounded back from a semifinal loss to beat top prep recruit Beau Bartlett 7-5 in a tiebreaker. Hoffman was upended by Princeton All-American Matt Kolodzik in the semifinals but had four bonus wins on the day with two technical falls, a fall and a major decision. Weiler beat Lehigh teammate Jake Logan by injury default after both wrestlers fell in semifinal action. Jakobsen overcame a semifinal loss to win by technical fall over Navy's Malcolm Wiley in the third place bout.
In addition to Meyer and Weiler, junior Joe Lobeck (133) and sophomore Josh Humphreys (157) settled for fourth place, withdrawing after semifinal losses. Lobeck dropped a sudden victory 12-10 match to Koehler, while Humphreys fell 11-5 to Princeton's Quincy Monday in the semis as the Tiger avenged two losses to Humphreys last season.
Consolation bracket winners at the Princeton Open claimed fifth place, with unattached freshmen Connor McGonagle (141) and Edmond Ruth (174) both overcoming first round losses by winning out. McGonagle won five bouts and earned a sixth win via medical forfeit. Among his wins were two over Princeton grapplers Pat D'Arcy and Marshall Keller and a 5-1 decision over Lehigh teammate Malyke Hines. Ruth won four straight on the back side at 174 after his first round loss.
At 125, freshman Mitchell Polito went 4-2 to claim sixth place, posting a 4-2 win over teammate Luke Resnick along the way.
Complete Lehigh results are listed below.
The Mountain Hawks will next compete at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Nov. 10 in Troy, N.Y. Lehigh is expected to enter 15-20 wrestlers in the day-long round robin tournament.
