"We didn't play the way we intended to today," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Our inconsistencies are putting us in challenging situations that we are struggling to work our way out of."
Â
The Mountain Hawks generated by far their best offensive chances in the first and fourth quarters, with all six of their shots on goal in those stanzas. LIU Brooklyn opened the scoring 11:06 into the contest as Alexis Ruiz beat freshman goalkeeper Maddie Kahn following a flurry in front of the cage. Kahn also made three first-quarter stops to keep her team within 1-0 after 15 minutes of play.

Lehigh's best first-half chances came in the game's 10th minute with four shots (three on goal) in the matter of 23 seconds.
Â
The third quarter saw just four combined shots, three from LIU, including two on goal from the Sharks. The quarter's biggest play came from freshman Sophia Hartman, who hustled back on defense for a defensive save, knocking away what looked like a sure goal.

The Mountain Hawks began the fourth with some momentum, generating two straight corners which led to consecutive shots on goal from junior Lenke Havas, but LIU goalkeeper Rachel Vellis stood tall. The first save was a low pad stop and on the second, she knocked a high ball out of harm's way with her stick.
Â
On the other end, Vellis' team doubled its lead at the 49:38 mark off a corner of its own as Sammy Bell made it 2-0. Less than four minutes later, junior Drew Pecora had a glittering opportunity for the Mountain Hawks. Her shot got behind Vellis, but hit the post and caromed out of harm's way.

Lehigh did get on the scoreboard for the 10th straight game at the 58:59 mark as junior Olivia Perrone found Bonthuis in the circle, who roofed a shot past the LIU goalkeeper to account for the 2-1 final.

Final shots were 14-12 in favor of Long Island while Lehigh held a 4-1 edge in penalty corners. Kahn finished with seven saves while Vellis tallied five.

The Mountain Hawks hit the road for two next weekend, traveling to Bucknell on Saturday (12 p.m.) and Lock Haven on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Â
"As we face the second half of our season, we need to reflect on the sacrifices we are willing to make to ensure we are at our best every game," said Dallmeyer.
