LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – One of the nation's leading scorers continued her impressive season on Sunday, as junior Drew Pecora scored her 11th goal of the year, but it wasn't enough as the Lehigh field hockey team fell at Lock Haven by a 4-1 final. After an early Bald Eagles' goal, the Mountain Hawks' defense held them down for the next 36:35, but Lehigh couldn't get its offense going until late. Lehigh falls to 5-7 on the season, heading into a Friday night matchup at home vs. Lafayette.
Â
"We played two very strong teams this weekend and struggled to put out our best performances," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We needed to be fundamentally sound in order to compete and we were inconsistent at best."
Â
With Pecora's 11 goals, she is within shouting distance of the program's all-time record for goals in a season – this with six regular-season games still remaining. She has scored at least one goal in six of 12 contests on the season, following her two goals at Bucknell Saturday and a goal Sunday.
Â
Pecora's score came with 1:30 remaining, firing a loose ball from in the circle into the back of the net to pull the Mountain Hawks within 4-1. The goal also prevented Lehigh from being shut-out for the first time this season.
Â
Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead just 4:44 into the contest. The Mountain Hawks settled down from there, allowing just three shots (only two on goal) the rest of the half. One was a glittering opportunity in the final seconds of the second quarter, but Kahn made an acrobatic save.
Â
Lehigh did hold a 2-1 second-quarter shots edge, both coming within moments of each other. Sophomore Leah Mulery fired a shot on goal at the 19:49 mark, which was saved. Then after the ensuing penalty corner, junior Lenke Havas' shot was also stopped by Lock Haven goalkeeper Mariana Birdthistle.
Â
Kahn made a trio of third-quarter saves before the Bald Eagles' fourth shot on goal of the stanza off a penalty corner doubled their lead.
Â
Lehigh had its fair share of opportunities all game, but couldn't beat Birdthistle until Pecora in the 59th minute. By that time, Lock Haven had added two more insurance goals in the fourth.
Â
Final shots were 14-7 in favor of Lock Haven while the Mountain Hawks held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. Kahn finished the game with seven saves while Birdthistle made five.
Â
"We had three starters out today which proved challenging as we were forced to make big adjustments in lineups and structure," said Dallmeyer. "Yesterday, our back line was our weakness and today, our attack line struggled to perform the way we needed them to. All in all, we need more consistency in individual performances in order for us to put together the chemistry we need to in order to pull out wins."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return home on Friday night to host archrival Lafayette at 7 p.m.
