Kahn stands tall as Mountain Hawks drop tight 1-0 final vs. Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh and Lafayette field hockey teams played a one-goal contest for a fifth straight season, but an early second-quarter Leopards' goal proved to be the game's only scoring as the Mountain Hawks fell 1-0 on Friday night at Ulrich Field. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Kahn was sensational, tying a career-high 12 saves, eight coming in the fourth quarter.
Â
After Kahn's strong saves to stay within striking distance, Lehigh created a penalty corner with just over a minute remaining. The ensuing Lenke Havas shot went in, but was too high and quickly whistled no goal as Lafayette wrapped up its second straight one-goal victory against the Mountain Hawks.
Â
"I was really proud," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We were able to execute a complicated game plan and our coaches, associate head coach Taylor Dyer and assistant coaches Rachel Konowal and Chris Chookagian, were able to teach it really well this week and our team was able to execute it. I knew going in that it would be a one-goal game, hoping we would come out on the other side. Some things didn't fall our way tonight, but we had some really good performances from some key players that really helped us keep momentum."
Â
A defensive first quarter saw just four combined shots, three from Lafayette and two on goal. Kahn stood tall while junior Drew Pecora had a strong chance on the other end at the 11:08 mark, but her shot was wide.
The Leopards turned the first second-quarter shot into the game's only goal as Molly McAndrew made a move into the circle and fired a shot past Kahn at 17:09. Lafayette held a 4-0 shots edge in the second quarter, with Kahn tallying two saves.
Â
The Mountain Hawks were outshot 2-0 in the third, but they created two penalty corners and consistent offensive pressure while limiting Lafayette's chances. Kahn was forced to make just one stop in the quarter.
Â
"We made a couple key adjustments going into the second half and our team ran with it," said Dallmeyer. "We had confidence, and confidence can really help us out.
Â
"The momentum, energy and enthusiasm we played tonight was really inspiring."
Â
Tides turned in the fourth when the Leopards held a 9-1 edge in shots (8-1 in shots on goal), but Kahn made seven saves and freshman Sydney White made a defensive stop, to give the Mountain Hawks a chance until the final whistle.
"Maddie is amazing," said Dallmeyer. "I don't know this game would have been as close if we didn't have her, but she kept momentum and she was able to play with so much composure for a freshman that it speaks to the type player she is and what she can do for our team."
Â
The Leopards finished with a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Kahn tallied 12 saves while White and sophomore Leah Mullery each made a defensive stop for the Mountain Hawks.
Â
"This is the best Lafayette team we've seen and played against since I've been here," said Dallmeyer. "They just keep getting better and stronger, as do we. I'm happy we're able to keep these games close and competitive. I believe it does show a lot of our progress and improvement, what we're able to do and put out on the field. I hope people saw that tonight."
