BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team took part in the 45th running of the Paul Short Run on the Goodman Cross Country Course on the campus of Lehigh University.
The Mountain Hawks saw action in two races on the day, with runners competing in the men's open 8k race along with the men's Gold 8k race.
The Gold race saw the men place 17th overall out of 41 competing schools. For the second straight year, Utah State took home first place in the men's Gold Race with a team score of 77. Peter Seufer of Virginia Tech was the individual winner with a time 24:11. Fellow Patriot League foe Army West Point placed third overall with a team score of 136. Sophomore Bradford DeMassa was the first Mountain Hawk to cross the finish line, placing 68th overall with a time of 25:26. Freshman Seth Slavin placed in the top-100 with an 80th place finish and a time of 25:31. Junior Jeffrey Kirshenbaum was next to finish for Lehigh with a 125th place finish with a final time of 25:46.
"I was pleased with how Bradford and Seth ran, but honestly, I think this team needs to figure out how to be better. We're training well, but we're not racing well. We have to commit to being more aggressive in races and leaving it all on the line a bit more."
In the men's open race, Lehigh competed against 33 other squads, one of which was a group of Lehigh cross country alumni.
"The alumni are a big reason why this meet the way it is. They're the lifeblood of our program. I love seeing them and catching up with them, but most of all I love that they still compete. That's something we take pride in. Kids leave here and they don't fell burnt out, they feel like they have the energy to keep going," said head coach Todd Etters.
For the active squad of Mountain Hawks, freshman Jack Good led the way with a time of 26:03. Sophomore Nick Norton was next for Lehigh with a time of 26:13. Senior Brian Arita was the third Mountain Hawk to place, finishing with a final time of 26:39. The Lehigh Alumni group was led by Kyle Kirk, who finished with a time of 26:36.
Lehigh travels to Princeton for its next meet, as they partake in the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. on Friday, October 12.
