BOSTON, Mass. – Lehigh's women's cross country team competed in a jam packed Coast-To-Coast Battle In Beantown Friday, featuring plenty of regionally ranked teams. The Mountain Hawks came away with an 18th place finish.
"It was an interesting race with an extremely talented group of teams from across the country," said head coach Debbie Utesch after the race. "It was a different look for our women, we didn't do much during the race, we went out very conservatively and finished conservative. It was a physical meet, with everyone fighting for position. We didn't lose anything, but we weren't able to gain much as the race went on."
Placing first for Lehigh was junior Diana Hammerstone, who finished 75th with a time of 18:20.2. This is the second straight race that Hammerstone has been the highest placed Mountain Hawk, with a first-place finish in the Lafayette dual meet last week. Behind Hammerstone was junior Ashleigh Crawford, who also finished in the top-100 with a 91st place finish and a time of 18:34.5. Yet another junior to place in the top-three among Mountain Hawk times was Hannah Bonaguid, who finished 107th with a time of 18:44.
"We had a split of 27 second from our top finisher to our fifth, that's exciting and encouraging. If they can latch on to each other in a larger meet like this, and jump up to the next level, we'll have plenty of exciting things come October.
Lehigh will return for their lone home meet of the year, with the 45th annual Paul Short run presented by Asics. The Paul Short run features some of the top college and high school teams in the country.
"Paul Short is what we'll be focusing on this week. We're excited to be at home for a meet, compared to last year where we were at home all the time. It's been a great opportunity for us to get out and adjust to different courses, and now they get to stay home and sleep in their own beds to get ready to race at a high level on their home course," said Utesch in regards to the upcoming meet.
