Lancaster's 22 kills lifts Lehigh over The Shore

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh Mountain Hawks just keep winning, apparent by their 3-1 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday night.

The Shore got out to an early one set lead, winning 25-19. However, from that point forward, it was all Lehigh.

"I think in some ways that (the first set) was a good motivator, because our girls were just not prepared for that and when it happened, I think it was a good smack in the face that woke them up and turned it on," said head coach Alexa Keckler.

"They recognized that they weren't able to have the errors and take them as lightly as they did in the first set and that definitely showed because they came back out guns ablazing in the second set."

The Mountain Hawks went on a big run in the second set that saw them take a 20-13 lead late, thanks to two key kills from sophomore Sabrina Lancaster. Lancaster finished the match with a career-high 22 kills.

"I think Sabrina's come into her own. She's starting to recognize that she can score in many different ways," said Keckler. "She can be an offensive threat front row and back row and she's really starting to fine tune her play. I'm really excited about where that's going to go for her and where it can go for the team."

The third set was back in Lehigh's favor again, as the Mountain Hawks took their second straight, this time 25-21, and then got some pressure from the Hawks in the fourth and final set before getting the match victory in the end.

"We really controlled things in the third set. Obviously that fourth set was a big push back from them, but ultimately it turned out to be a good win," Keckler said.
Sophomore Hannah Wright finished with 10 kills and eight digs for Lehigh, while junior Julia Pressly also added 10 kills, and junior Emily Poole had six blocks. Patriot League Rookie of the Week Alina Lam flourished at setter in her second straight start, finishing with a career-high 38 assists, six digs, and four service aces.

The Mountain Hawks hit .265 as a team with 49 kills, nine aces, and six blocks. Lehigh got the victory, despite The Shore hitting .284 as a team and losing the attack error battle 19-15.

At 10-1, Lehigh knows that the best competition is yet to come and it's only getting started especially with Patriot League play starting up September 21 vs. Loyola.

"I think ultimately we're going to continue to be challenged and pushed," said Keckler. "We're going to have to find ways to adjust, find ways to be smarter, find ways to play harder. It's definitely not going to get any easier moving forward.

"We're going to have to really grind out our practices and push ourselves to get better every day."

The Colonial Classic in Williamsburg, Virginia this weekend has been canceled due to Hurricane Florence. Any future matches involving Lehigh will be announced at a later date.
