BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh's volleyball team is heading to Fairfax, Va. to take on George Mason Friday night at 7 p.m. in the final non-league match of the regular season.
The meeting replaces the Mountain Hawks' trip to Williamsburg, Va. for William & Mary's Colonial Classic due to Hurricane Florence affecting the area.
Lehigh is continuing its impressive stretch to start the season on Friday. The Mountain Hawks won their last two matches, downing Maryland Eastern Shore at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Tuesday night after defeating Penn last Saturday.
Sophomore Sabrina Lancaster led the team with a career-high 22 kills, added eight digs, and hit .319 to pace the Mountain Hawks. Patriot League Rookie of the Week Alina Lam had another impressive showing in her second straight start. She finished with 45 assists and six digs.
The Shore took the first set of the match before the Mountain Hawks took three straight to improve their record to a program-best 10-1 to start the year.
Lancaster has been on a tear in the first 11 matches of the season, leading Lehigh in kills with 131 and kills per set with 3.74. Junior Lauren Bright continues to hold the team lead in hitting percentage with a .380 mark. Junior Emily Poole is second at .368. Defensively, Poole leads Lehigh in blocks with 41.
The Mountain Hawks are hitting .248 as a team through 39 sets and are holding opponents to a .133 percentage. Lehigh is tops in the Patriot League as of now in both of those categories. Lehigh also leads the league in kills per set (13.21), opponent kills per set (10.54), assists per set (13.21), opponent assists per set (10.54), and opponent blocks per set (1.69).
George Mason comes into Friday evening at 2-7 following four straight losses to Virginia, Youngstown State, UNC Wilmington and Navy. The Patriots have a victory over Norfolk State and a win over Penn, who Lehigh also defeated during the Valley Forge Sports Invitational last weekend.
The Patriots are led by Peyton Ehmke, who's hitting .265 and averaging 2.13 kills per set this season. Ehmke is also leading George Mason on the defensive side of the net with 23 blocks. Catie Espinoza leads the Patriots in digs per set with 3.79.
George Mason is hitting .153 as a team, limiting opponents to a .252 percentage this year. The Patriots have hit sub-.200 since their Sept. 1 match with Norfolk State where they hit a season-high .391.
The Mountain Hawks are 1-7 all-time against George Mason, winning the last meeting, 3-0 in Fairfax back on Sept. 5, 2014.
Lehigh returns home for the first two games of Patriot League play next weekend against Loyola on Friday and Navy on Saturday.
