EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team earned victories in 12 of 19 events on Sunday afternoon to take down Lafayette 113-87 in the school's annual outdoor dual meet. Junior sprinter Emre Soybas earned wins in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes to lead Lehigh and earn Track Athlete of the Meet honors. Junior Ryan Givens also earned a pair of victories on the day in both the long jump and high jump, and was named the Field Athlete of the Meet. Lehigh has now defeated the Leopards in six of the last eight outdoor dual meets, and the Mountain Hawks have now swept Lafayette in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for the second straight season.
For Soybas, Sunday marked the second time this season that he was named the Track Athlete of the Meet at the Lehigh-Laf dual, having previously earned the honor at the indoor dual back in January after also winning the 200m and 400m dashes.
Freshman Samuel Tapera led three Mountain Hawks to a clean sweep of the 100m dash in 11.07 seconds, and later finished runner-up to Soybas in the 200m (22.53). Senior Michael Camera scored points in second place of the 100m dash and landed on the podium in third in the 200m. Kyle Kirk scored team points behind Soybas by finishing third in the 400m dash.
"I'm super proud of them stepping up in some not great conditions," Utesch said of Soybas and Givens. "It makes a big difference when you can depend on those guys who are upperclassmen. I told the kids the weather doesn't matter because we're all competing in it and to just go out and do what you have to do to win."
In the 800m, freshman Sean Brown emerged victorious in 1:59.19. Junior Kyle Berman was the winner in the 1500m, earning the maximum five points in 4:01.19, and Matt Kravitz (4:08.15) picked up two points in third place. The 5,000m saw another Lehigh sweep with senior John Tolbert (15:51.91) edging out teammates Seth Slavin (15:51.95) and Brad DeMassa (15:51.98).
The 3,000m steeplechase featured another top three sweep for Lehigh with senior Henry Paul (9:32.82) coming within four seconds of a PR with his victory. Sophomore Victor Yegon (9:44.02) scored points in the runner-up position with Joseph Inglis (10:06.29) following in third.
Senior Trevor Knowles raced to a victory in the 110m hurdles, crossing the finish line 14.76 seconds, tying his PR that he set last week at the Lafayette 8-Way. Sophomore Kyle Sult joined him on the podium with his third place PR of 15.21 seconds. Freshman Evan El-Halawani was victorious in the 400m hurdles, edging out three Leopards for the title in 57.60.
Givens led the Brown and White to a top-two sweep in the long jump at 6.79 meters, with freshman Justin Brown (6.65m) taking second. Givens' second title of the day came in the high jump after clearing 1.90m. Sult joined him on the podium after leaping over the bar at 1.85m. Sophomore Erik Metz (13.37m) and senior Taj Blount-Oden (13.08m) took second and third, respectively, in the triple jump.
In the pole vault, which moved indoors due to weather conditions, Joey Kelly and Max Jordan both cleared 4.25 meters to finish second and third, respectively.
Sult (58.11m), Jarrett Taneyhill (50.04m) and Knowles swept the top three spots in the javelin, while freshman Christopher Alexy (41.97m) took runner-up in the discus. Anastasios Mouzakis used a PR of 49.93m to lead Lehigh in third in the hammer throw. Junior Alexander Rodgers (14.35m) took home second place in the shot put to lead the Mountain Hawks.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will have representatives at a pair of meets next weekend including the Coach P. Invitational at Moravian on Friday-Saturday, April 13-14, and the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
