BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After competing in stroke play throughout the fall and its first two spring tournaments, the Lehigh women's golf team will try on match play for size at the FDU Checkmate Challenge, hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson at the Seaview Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. Saturday and Sunday.
The Mountain Hawks will be part of an eight team match play tournament playing two matches on Saturday and then the placement round on Sunday. Lehigh is seeded third in the field and will open with No. 6 Hartford Saturday at 8:20 a.m. Each round will consist of five singles matches. Round two, with semifinals and first round consolations will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday. Sunday's action begins with the seventh place match at 8 a.m. with the championship matches teeing off a little before 9 a.m.
Other quarterfinal matchups for the women include No. 1 Navy vs. No. 8 Saint Francis (Pa.), No. 2 Fairleigh Dickinson vs. No. 7 Siena and No. 4 Dartmouth vs. No. 5 Wagner.
Last time out Lehigh finished 10th out of 15 teams at the William & Mary Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. Junior Reagan Jahn tied for 23rd to lead the Mountain Hawks and has been Lehigh's top finisher in each of its first two spring events. Senior Megan Moylan, sophomore Minuette Laessig and freshman Alexis Browne have all competed for Lehigh's scoring team through the first two tournaments, while sophomore Rebecca Markunas and freshman Angela Ding have alternated scoring and competing as individuals.
Action this weekend will be contested on the Pines Course, one of two courses at Seaview Golf Club, which hosted the 1942 PGA Championship.
Following the FDU Checkmate Challenge Lehigh will resume stroke tournament play at the Navy Spring Invitational, April 7-8 in Annapolis, Md. That tournament will be Lehigh's final tune-up for the Patriot League Championship, which Navy will host two weeks later.
