TAMPA, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team recorded its 1,000th win in program history with a 3-1 victory over Elon in game one of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks later dropped game two 8-0 in five innings to South Florida. Sophomore pitcher Parker Boyd went the distance in the historic victory, allowing just one earned run and no walks on five hits with five strikeouts. Sophomore Reva Alderman had a hit and two RBI while sophomore Mary-Hannah Smith picked up a pair of hits and scored one run in the win. Senior Nicole Yozzo had one hit in both games and scored a run in the game one victory. The split moves Lehigh to 4-13 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks used three first inning runs to take the early lead on Elon (13-10). Yozzo led off with a bunt single and promptly stole second, and scored one batter later on a throwing error by the third baseman. After Smith singled, senior Carolyn Wright dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third, and then Alderman stepped up and knocked a 1-2 pitch up the middle to score Katie Schultz and Smith to make it 3-0 Lehigh.
The Brown and White managed just three baserunners the rest of the way against Elon starter Kiandra Mitchum, coming on a single by Shultz in the third, and a double from Smith and a fielder's choice by Wright in the sixth.
Boyd, who picked up her third win of the season, made the runs stand up, working around a two-out single in the second inning and retiring the side in order in the third and fourth innings. The Phoenix strung together a double and RBI single with two outs to get on the board in the fifth inning before Boyd induced a fly out to left, holding the score at 3-1. Boyd then used a pop out, fielder's choice and groundout to work around a leadoff single in the sixth, and then breezed through the seventh inning on just six pitches to lock down the victory.
In the nightcap, Lehigh managed to muster just one hit in the game, coming when Yozzo led off the game with a single. USF's Hannah Parker stymied Lehigh, retiring the next seven hitters in a row, and 11 of the last 12 overall before departing after four innings. Lehigh put two runners on with two outs in the fifth against reliever Miriam Schmoll, but was unable to score.
Lehigh used four pitchers in the five inning game, after USF (18-12) struck for four runs in the first inning following a hit batter and three hits, including a big three-run bases clearing double. The Bulls added a run in the second off the bullpen via a walk, bunt single and sacrifice fly to make it 5-0, before adding two more in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a two-run homer from Astin Donovan. USF ended the game in the fifth inning with one run off four walks.
Lehigh will wrap up its trip to the Sunshine State on Saturday afternoon with two games in Clearwater against LIU Brooklyn (12 p.m.) and Florida Gulf Coast (4:45 p.m.). LU is scheduled to host its home opener on Wednesday afternoon, March 21, with a doubleheader against Delaware.
