Mountain Hawks Prepare For NCAA Regionals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team looks to take the momentum they gained from the Patriot League Championship as they send their top-seven runners to compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional hosted by Penn State Friday in University Park, Pa.
The top two teams from each region, plus 13 at-large teams from across the country will qualify for next weeks NCAA championships. After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals will be selected to compete at nationals. A complete breakdown of the qualification process can be found by clicking here.
After their second-place finish in the Patriot League Championship on October 27, Lehigh has jumped into the top-10 teams in the Mid-Atlantic region as the No. 10 team. Also representing the Patriot league in the region is Bucknell (7) and Navy (13).
Junior Diana Hammerstone is coming off an eighth-place overall finish at the Patriot League Championship which also saw her named to the All-Patriot League Second Team. Competing in all but two events this year, Hammerstone was the leading runner for Lehigh in every race she ran.
Also competing for Lehigh at the NCAA Regional will be senior Stacie Nadel, junior Hannah Bonaguidi, freshman Jamie Zamrin, freshman Nicole Abbondandelo, freshman Martina Sell, junior Ashleigh Crawford, and freshman Jade Sessions.
Nadel ran her best race in all the Penn State Open where she ran a time of 22:23 while Bonaguidi ran in five events for Lehigh and had her best time of 22:10 at the Paul Short Run. Zamrin ran her best race of the year in the Patriot League Championship where she finished 12th overall with a time of 22:21.0.
Abbondandelo ran in but one race this year, with her fastest time coming in the Patriot League Championship with a time of 22:31.1 and a 14th place overall finish. Sell was yet another runner for Lehigh to put it all together at the championship this year, as she finished 24th and recorded a time of 22:49.2.
Crawford was the second fastest runner for Lehigh for most of the year, finishing second for Lehigh three times. Crawford placed 22nd at the Patriot League Championship with a time of 22:46.2. Sessions who was named as the Patriot League Rookie Runner of the Week earlier this year ran in six events with her best race coming at the Penn State Open where she finished with a time of 22:28.
Last season the Mountain Hawks placed 14th in the NCAA Regionals. Totaling 433 points, Lehigh finished third among Patriot League teams at the meet. Lehigh was paced by Maura Henderson who placed 60th overall out of 193 finishers in 21:30.8.
