BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The day is finally here, as the second-seeded Lehigh men's soccer team is now prepared to face No. 3 Colgate on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Patriot League semifinals. The winner will take on host Loyola or Army West Point for the Patriot League Championship on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks have had quite the season under head coach Dean Koski this year in his 27th season. Lehigh finished the regular season with a 9-7-2 overall record, 6-3-0 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks reeled off wins over George Washington, St. John's, Rider, Army, Boston U., Colgate, Navy, Bucknell and Holy Cross this season to get to this point in the season.
Lehigh is led by recently named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Mark Forrest, who enters the weekend with 41 career goals and 103 career points, three goals and four points shy of both the Lehigh and Patriot League records. Forrest finished the regular season with eight goals and five assists for 21 points, including three game-winning scores.
Forrest is coming off his best performance of the season, notching all three goals in a 3-1 victory over Holy Cross on Senior Night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. He was named Patriot League Player of the Week for his night.
All-Patriot League third team selection freshman Josh Luchini enters Friday night as the Mountain Hawks' second leading scorer, with six goals and three assists for 15 points. Like Forrest, Luchini has also had his fair share of game-winners this season, with four to his name, leading the league in that category.
The Mountain Hawks are also fortunate to have the services of three other All-Patriot League selections, as senior midfielder Oscar Greene, junior defender Zarin Tuten and junior goalkeeper Will Smith were all named to the second team.
Tuten and Smith were major players in orchestrating a Patriot League-leading nine shutouts for the Mountain Hawk defense, holding opponents to just 0.78 goals per game in 18 games. In addition to his shutouts and goals against average, Smith's save percentage of 0.825 was good enough for first in the Patriot League this season.
For Lehigh, the defense has been the biggest strength for the team despite senior co-captain Matt Morana missing the first half of the season due to illness and sophomore defender Tyler Dressman out since Sept. 15 due to injury. In addition to the return of Morana and Tuten, the defense has thrived thanks to standout play from junior Nolan Coulter and freshman Dawson Berger.
With Greene as the leading midfielder, the Mountain Hawks have also benefitted from many other players, including sophomore Trevor Koski, freshman Michael Tahiru and sophomore Stevo Bednarsky, who have all served as key starters for Lehigh all season long.
In the regular season matchup with then-No. 20 Colgate, the Mountain Hawks came out on top, 1-0 contest at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Oct. 3. Forrest scored the game-winning goal, thanks to a feed from Luchini.
Since then, the Raiders are 5-2-1. Colgate is coming off an intense victory over American in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday night. The Raiders took down the Eagles, 3-2 in overtime in Hamilton, N.Y.
Colgate is statistically led by both Oliver Harris and Abdel Sanogo on offense, who have both scored three goals this season. In addition to his three scores, Harris has also tallied four assists for a team-high 10 points.
The Raiders' biggest strength is their versatility on offense, with 13 different players scoring goals this season. Kentaro Morrison leads the team in shots on goal with 15 this season.
In net, Colgate will get the services of Jacob Harris, the All-Patriot League third team selection. Harris leads the Patriot League with a 0.69 GAA and is second with a 0.811 save percentage. Harris is second in the league with eight shutouts this season.
Historically, Lehigh is 9-9-7 in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks are 5-3-7 in semifinal matchups. The last time Lehigh played a semifinal game in the tournament was Nov. 13, 2015, also against Colgate, and defeated the Raiders on their home field, 2-0 en route to the Mountain Hawks' second Patriot League title.
The Raiders are 4-11-4 in semifinal matchups all-time, and have a 2-2-1 record against Lehigh in Patriot League tournament matchups.
Friday's game from Baltimore will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network at 7 p.m. following the conclusion of the first semifinal matchup between host and top-seed Loyola and No. 5 Army West Point.
The championship game is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday in Baltimore.
