BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh volleyball team is one win away from heading to the Patriot League tournament as the No. 3 seed following a historic regular season.
However, before the Mountain Hawks (20-7, 9-6) can make any postseason plans, the team welcomes Colgate to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Friday at 7 p.m. for the final home match of 2018. The two squads played five sets back on Oct. 12 in Hamilton, N.Y. that resulted in a Raider win.
The Mountain Hawks are in the midst of a three-match winning streak after previously falling in five of their last six. Lehigh rattled off a sweep of Bucknell on Friday, a four-set victory over archrival Lafayette on Sunday and a sweep of first-place American on Tuesday night.
The Eagles' loss on Tuesday marks the first time American has lost in straight sets on its home floor to a Patriot League opponent.
Sophomore Sabrina Lancaster had her best match of the year so far, hitting a season-high .478 with 14 kills. Lancaster eclipsed the 300-kill mark for the season, currently with 305. In addition, Patriot League Player of the Week Hannah Wright added 13 kills, six digs and three blocks with a hitting percentage of .375. Lancaster and Wright, along with contributions from juniors Lauren Bright, Emily Poole and Julia Pressly allowed the Mountain Hawks to hit .350 as a team against the Eagles, the second-highest match total of the season. Lehigh hit a season-high .375 against Coppin State on Sept. 1.
Tuesday's match was highlighted by a historic moment for the volleyball program as senior libero Emily Develle tallied 12 digs to make herself Lehigh's all-time leader in that category with 1,704 digs and counting. The record of 1,693 was previously held by Rachel Charles (2010-13). Develle currently has 439 to her credit so far this season.
Freshman setter Alina Lam will look to continue her dominance heading into Friday's match with Colgate, having registered 30 or more assists in her last six matches.
After the Mountain Hawks hit .215 in a losing effort against Colgate the last time out, they haven't hit over .200 until Tuesday vs. American. In that span, Lehigh is 4-4.
The Raiders (13-13, 8-6) are looking for a chance to sneak into the Patriot League tournament by way of tiebreaker on Friday if they can get past the Mountain Hawks for the second time this season. Colgate is currently on a mini-losing streak, having dropped back-to-back contests to Navy and American. Previously, the Raiders had won four in a row, all in straight sets.
Colgate has two regular season matches left on the schedule with a visit to Lehigh and then a home matchup with Loyola on Sunday. A Lehigh victory on Friday night could set up Sunday's matchup between Loyola and Colgate to be the play-in game into the Patriot League tournament.
The Raiders are led offensively by Alli Lowe, who leads the team in kills with 280 and kills per set with 3.08. Taylor Flaherty currently paces the team with a .276 hitting percentage. Julia Kurowski leads Colgate with 883 assists, second most in the Patriot League. She's currently averaging 9.70 per set. Bridget Kolsky is the team-leader in digs with 249, averaging 3.77 per set, seventh in the Patriot League.
Colgate has the edge in the all-time series vs. Lehigh, with a 40-19 record. The Mountain Hawks have dropped the previous two matchups with the Raiders, last victorious on Sept. 22, 2017, 3-0.
Friday's match will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network at 7 p.m.
