Mountain Hawks Shut Down Norfolk State In Christmas City Classic

11/24/2018 6:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa.  -The Lehigh women's basketball team took care of business as the Mountain Hawks defeated the Norfolk State Spartans 62-41 in the first game of the 2018 Christmas City Classic presented by Best Western, Saturday at Stabler Arena.

Lehigh moves to 5-1 overall with the victory, while Norfolk State drops to 2-4 with the loss. The last time Lehigh has started a season with its first five wins coming by 10 or more points was during the 2009-10 season.

Junior Camryn Buhr was the leading scorer for the Mountain Hawks with 15 points. It was also her first double-double of the year as she brought in 11 rebounds. Her 15 points were a season high, besting the 14 she scored against Monmouth on Education Day. Buhr also had three assists and four steals to fill out the stat sheet. Buhr is the second Mountain Hawk this season to record a double-double, with freshman Emma Grothaus recording the inaugural double-double against Kutztown. Buhr has also recorded double figures in scoring in every game this season so far.

Senior Hailey Pascoe had a bounce-back game against the Spartans after only scoring three points against Binghamton. Pascoe chipped in 14 points with 12 of those points coming via three-point baskets. Pascoe's 14 points against Norfolk State tied her season high at Central Connecticut State earlier this season.

Lehigh's defense once again shut down its opponent's offense. In the three home wins for the Mountain Hawks this season, all three of them have featured the opposing team shooting below 40 percent from the field.

Lehigh continues to see points come from multiple sources, as the Mountain Hawks have seen five of their six games feature three or more players recording double figures in scoring, as junior Gena Grundhoffer joined Buhr and Pascoe in double-figures, after putting up 12 points against the Spartans.

Lehigh started the game on fire, dropping 24 points in the first quarter. Those 24 points tied a season-high for points scored in the first quarter with the 24 scored at Central Connecticut State. The Mountain Hawks started off with a 7-0 run that featured Buhr contributing four points along with a Pascoe three. Charlotte would get as close as five points in the quarter after a La'Deja James layup to make it 7-2. Lehigh would end the quarter on a 10-4 run. The first quarter of play saw Lehigh shot 57.1 percent from the floor, that would be the best quarter in terms of shooting percentage for Lehigh on the day.

The Mountain Hawks  would continue to outwork the Spartans, scoring 14 points in the second quarter compared to the six put up by Norfolk State. Those six points are the second-fewest points allowed in a quarter since Lehigh held Kutztown to three points in the second quarter on November 6.

The Spartans would surge in the third quarter, the only quarter of play that Norfolk State would outscore the Mountain Hawks. Even after outscoring Lehigh 16-9, the Spartans would still trail the Mountain Hawks by 15 by the time the two teams headed into the fourth quarter.

Lehigh would get back to form in the fourth quarter, putting up 15 points while holding Norfolk State to just nine points in the final frame and ending the quarter on a 13-4 run. Of the 14-points Pascoe scored against the Spartans, eight of them were in the fourth quarter along with two of her four three-pointers on the day.

After beating Liberty in the second game of the day, the Charlotte 49ers will match up with the Mountain Hawks tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. for the championship game of the Christmas City Classic at Stabler Arena.
