BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh returns to the road, looking to stop a five-game slide as the Mountain Hawks open a two-game road swing with a visit to Georgetown on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks fell 43-14 to Fordham in their league opener in a game in which they passed for a season-best 282 yards but only mustered 88 on the ground, while turning the ball over three times. The defense mustered three sacks and seven tackles for loss but Fordham capitalized on several big plays in the passing game. Lehigh puts its 17-game winning streak against Georgetown on the line against a Hoya squad that is 2-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since 2010 and is armed with a defense that tops the league in sacks and interceptions.
Last season Lehigh ranked among the top passing offenses in the FCS but the Mountain Hawks have struggled to replicate last year's success. The passing game showed signs of life against Fordham as senior Brad Mayes completed 20 passes for a season-high 282 yards. Both of Lehigh's touchdowns came through the air as well. Mayes completed passes to six different receivers and was not sacked for the first time this season. Sophomore Jorge Portorreal led the receivers with seven catches, while junior Devon Bibbens had a career-best 112 yards and a touchdown on five receptions.
Lehigh's passing game has been bolstered by the addition of freshmen Austin Dambach and Raymond Falcone to the wide receiver rotation. Dambach has started the last two games due to an injury to senior Luke Christiano, and has caught a touchdown pass in both games. Falcone made his first career start in a four-receiver set against Fordham and finished with three receptions for 50 yards.
The Mountain Hawks' defensive performance this season has been highlighted by an ability to make stops in the opponents' backfield. The Mountain Hawks had 10 tackles for loss in each of their first two games and are averaging more than five tackles for loss per game. Coming into this season, Lehigh had 10 or more tackles for loss just twice since the start of the 2013 season. Lehigh had 11 tackles for loss in wins against Georgetown in 2015 and Holy Cross in 2016. Junior Colin Nace leads Lehigh with 4.5 tackles for loss, while senior Mark Walker has four and junior Keith Woetzel has 3.5. The Mountain Hawks had seven tackles for loss in their Patriot League opener versus Fordham, with senior Juwan Morrow and junior Davis Maxie each recording two and senior Sam McCloskey contributing a career-high 1.5.
At 2-0, Georgetown is off to its best Patriot League start since 2010. The Hoyas moved to 2-0 in the league and improved to 3-4 overall with a 13-6 win at Lafayette last weekend. Georgetown opened league play with a 23-11 win at Fordham on Oct. 6. The Hoyas have been known for being tough defensively and currently lead the Patriot League in sacks (18) and interceptions (13). Wes Bowers is the top tackler with 56 while Khristian Tate has been a force with 32 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Quarterback Gunther Johnson ran for a pair of touchdowns to supply the scoring in the win over Lafayette. Jackson Saffold and Herman Moultrie III have share the workload on the ground in recent games, while Brandon Williams and Michael Dareus are the top receivers.
Lehigh and Georgetown meet for the 24th time with the Mountain Hawks leading the series 18-5. Lehigh has won the last 17 meetings, including Patriot League-title clinching wins in 2010 and 2011. The Brown and White met the Hoyas for the first time in 1901 and the teams did not meet between 1926 and 2001.
Lehigh has had little trouble with Georgetown since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001. The Mountain Hawks have outscored the Hoyas by an average of 38-13 in the last 17 games.
Saturday's game kicks off just after 2 p.m. from Cooper Field in Washington, D.C. The game will stream live on the Patriot League Network and via Facebook Watch. Audio coverage will be available on Fox Sports Radio 1230 and 1320 beginning at 1 p.m.
Lehigh returns to the road next Saturday as the Mountain Hawks visit Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks have won three straight against the Crusaders, including a 34-21 triumph last year at Goodman Stadium where Dom Bragalone rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns. Game time is set for 1:05 p.m. from Fitton Field in Worcester, Mass.
