2017-18 Schedule
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh head men's basketball coach Brett Reed announced the Mountain Hawks' 2017-18 schedule on Monday, which features five games against NCAA Tournament teams, including three who won at least one game in last season's tournament. In total, Lehigh will face eight teams who advanced to a national postseason tournament, including USC and Virginia who each reached the NCAA Round of 32.
"I feel our schedule is solid," said Reed. "We're going to be tested in many different ways. We have chances to play against some nationally noteworthy programs, but we're also competing against some of our peers at the mid-major level who have really had excellent seasons. It's going to be a great opportunity for us to challenge ourselves. Plus, staying in our region can provide an additional benefit of reducing the number of classes that we'll miss, so our guys can perform well academically."
The Mountain Hawks begin their season against three straight MAAC opponents, at Marist on Saturday (Nov. 11), home vs. Monmouth on Tuesday (Nov. 14) and home against Siena on Friday (Nov. 17). Last season, Monmouth won the MAAC regular season championship and advanced to the NIT while Siena reached the MAAC Championship Game where it fell in overtime to Iona. The Siena matchup is the night before Lehigh football hosts Lafayette in the 153rd meeting in the most-played rivalry in college football history.
After a home game vs. Eastern University on Sunday (Nov. 19), Lehigh heads to Southern California on Thanksgiving Eve (Wednesday, Nov. 22) to face the Trojans, who beat Providence and SMU in the 2017 NCAA Tournament and finished the season 26-10. The game will be a homecoming for junior Kyle Leufroy and sophomore Jordan Cohen, who are both from Southern California (Pasadena and Tarzana, respectively).
The Mountain Hawks will then head to Pittsburgh to face the Panthers of the ACC on Saturday, Nov. 25 in Lehigh's third game at Pitt in the last six years (last playing in 2013). The Mountain Hawks travel to defending Ivy League Champion Princeton on Wednesday, Nov. 29 looking for their second straight win against the Tigers following last season's 76-67 home opening victory. That precedes a trip to Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday (Dec. 2) to face the Cavaliers. UVA finished last season 23-11, beating UNC Wilmington in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Lehigh wraps up its nonleague schedule by hosting Yale (Wednesday, Dec. 6), welcoming defending NEC Champion Mount Saint Mary's (Saturday, Dec. 9) and heading to defending NEC finalist Saint Francis (Pa.) (Thursday, Dec. 21).
Patriot League play begins on Friday, Dec. 29 at Lafayette while Lehigh's first home league game is set for the following Friday (Jan. 5) against Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks travel to Boston University on Monday, Jan. 8 in a rematch of last season's thrilling Patriot League Semifinal win before heading to Bucknell on Thursday, Jan. 11 in a rematch of the title game.
Along with the Jan. 5 matchup vs. Holy Cross, Lehigh's Patriot League home games are Jan. 14 (Sunday) vs. American, Jan. 17 (Wednesday) against Colgate, Jan. 24 (Wednesday) against Loyola, Saturday, Jan. 27 (Saturday) vs. Navy, Feb. 3 (Saturday) against Boston University, Feb. 7 (Wednesday) vs. Bucknell, Feb. 17 (Saturday) against Army West Point and Feb. 24 (Saturday) vs. Lafayette.
"We're going to see a variety of different styles, we're going to see teams with different strengths and we're going to see teams who have experience returning," said Reed. "That mix of exposure will hopefully give us some things we can learn about ourselves and improve, or provide validation that we're doing some things well as we have success out on the floor. If we carry that forward and take each of those individual events and learn from them, grow from them and build month after month, it's going to put us in a pretty good position to be ready for the battles and the challenges we're going to see in Patriot League play."
