Men’s Track to Renew Rivalry with Lafayette on Saturday

Meet Schedule | Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team is ready to renew its rivalry with Lafayette this Saturday at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex in Easton. The Lehigh men have won four of the last six dual meets between the two schools and hold a 17-10 mark against the Leopards on the outdoor track since 1990. Along with the women's team, Lehigh will be looking to grab the first men's and women's sweep of the Leopards (indoor and outdoor) since the 2011-12 season.
"It's always a big rivalry," said head coach Matt Utesch. "The thing you can expect is a great track meet. Lafayette always brings everything they have and certainly, we do. It's always a dog fight and that's what makes it great."
At last year's outdoor dual meet, Lehigh swept the podium in five different events, but came up on the short end of a 101-98 loss to the Leopards. The Mountain Hawks rebounded earlier this season by winning 12 of 17 events to capture the indoor dual meet at Rauch Fieldhouse by a score of 107-74.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off last weekend's Muhlenberg Invitational where they grabbed seven individual wins and five runner-up finishes at the unscored meet. This will be the second time Lehigh takes to the track at Lafayette this outdoor season. The Brown and White took home first place at the Lafayette 7-Way Invitational back on March 25, where they racked up 11 individual wins, including one in the 400m dash from freshman Joe Espinal who was named the Patriot League's Rookie and Track Athlete of the Week.
"We match up really well against Lafayette and I think what you'll see in every event group, both the men and women are going to do really well," Utesch said. "I think in the sprints we're going to do very well, and we have a great group of kids in the sprint/middle distance group for both men and women.
"As we move into the longer distances, we've done really well in cross country and scored a lot of points indoors," Utesch said. "And we pick up the steeplechase this year which we've traditionally been great at. In the field events, Lafayette has a couple of good kids in different areas, but I like our chances."
Saturday's dual meet will begin with the field events at 11:30 a.m. The track events will get underway at 12:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100 meter run, followed at 12:35 p.m. by the men's 4x100m. The meet is slated to conclude at 3:30 p.m. with the men's 4x400 meter race. Live results will not be available for the meet.
