Lehigh opens spring break trip to California with 2-0 setback against Cal Poly

STANFORD, Calif. – Lehigh had its opportunities but was unable to push any runs across in its opening game of the Stanford Easton Classic as the Mountain Hawks fell 2-0 to Cal Poly Friday night at Stanford's Smith Family Stadium.
The Mustangs' Lindsey Chalmers limited Lehigh to just four hits, but the Mountain Hawks had base runners in six of seven innings and put the leadoff batter on in four of those frames. Lehigh left seven runners on base as Cal Poly pushed across single runs in the third and fifth innings.
Chelsea Convissar went 3-for-3 for Cal Poly (14-6), while sophomore Jen Stoll and freshman Mary-Hannah Smith both reached base twice to pace Lehigh, which suffers its fourth straight setback and falls to 4-7 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks' best scoring opportunity came in the top of the third inning as Stoll drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed into scoring position. Junior Nicole Yozzo reached on an error and later stole second, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Chalmers struck out senior Ashley Cole and got senior Vicky Lattanzio to foul out to end the threat.
Cal Poly took the lead in the bottom of the frame, beginning with a leadoff walk, a bunt single and a sacrifice. Sierra Hyland delivered a RBI fielder's choice as Amanda Sandoval beat the throw home.
Convissar led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to center to double the Mustangs' lead.
Sophomore Emily Sorem started in the circle for Lehigh and took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings with three walks and a strikeout. She is now 0-4 on the season.
Chalmers walked two and struck out five in a complete-game effort.
Lehigh will continue action at the Stanford Easton Classic on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks take on host Stanford at 4:15 p.m. PT and Grand Canyon at 6:30 p.m. PT.
