BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team hung tough against No. 22 Boston University for the first 60+ minutes, but the Terriers scored three goals over the final 9:10 to down the Mountain Hawks 6-0 on Saturday afternoon in their final home game of 2017. Lehigh tallied the first two shots and penalty corner of the game and was within striking distance at the half, Boston University's offense proved too much as it improved to 5-0 in league play.
Â
"The first half was great," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We hung with a very talented team and we had some great attacking opportunities that we were not able to finish. We talked about adjustments that we needed to make in the second half and as soon as we started to struggle with the score, we allowed more opportunities for them and they capitalized."
Â
The Mountain Hawks recorded the game's first two shots, off the sticks of juniors Teresa Carotenuto (blocked) and Lindsay Alvarez (wide). Â Boston University responded with the final 12 shots of the first half. Innarella was strong in the cage, making six first-half stops, but the Terriers were able to beat her at the 15:23 and 21:03 marks to take a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Â
Innarella made two more saves early in the second half, the second being a point-blank stop of Allie Renzi, but Renzi put home the rebound to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Â
Sophomore Amanda Boyer recorded Lehigh's first two shots on goal, in the 58th and 60th minutes, respectively, but Terriers' goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan turned them aside. Less than a minute later, Boston University took a 4-0 lead, which began a three-goal surge to end the game as the Terriers wrapped up the 6-0 victory.
Â
Final shots were 23-7 in favor of Boston University while the Terriers held a 3-2 edge in penalty corners. Innarella finished with nine saves for the Mountain Hawks while Keegan made two second-half saves for Boston University.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to Columbia to face the Lions. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
