BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh returns to Goodman Stadium Saturday looking for a 2-0 start to the Patriot League season as the Mountain Hawks host Georgetown. The Mountain Hawks used a balanced offensive attack and an improved second half defensive effort to pick up their first win of 2017 in their 41-38 win at Colgate last weekend. Junior Dominick Bragalone rushed for 186 yards and scored two touchdowns while quarterback Brad Mayes threw for 297 yards and two scores, including the go-ahead 35-yard touchdown to senior Troy Pelletier with 3:36 to play. A win over Georgetown would send Lehigh into its bye week at 2-0 in the league. Saturday's game is presented by the Northampton and Lehigh County Drug and Alcohol Administrations with the Center for Humanistic Change.
Â
Lehigh welcomes back its 1977 Division II National Championship team Saturday afternoon in celebration of the 40th anniversary of their national title. The then-Engineers, coached by the legendary John Whitehead, posted a 12-2 record, highlighted by a 33-0 drubbing of Jacksonville State in the Pioneer Bowl (National Championship game) and a 35-17 win over Lafayette. The team was led offensively by the quarterback-receiver duo of Mike Rieker and Steve Kreider, who helped Lehigh outgain its opponents by more than 1,800 yards, while the Lehigh defense, led by Jim McCormick and Greg Clark, held opponents to just 12.5 points per game during the regular season.
Â
After going 0-5 in the non-league schedule, Lehigh wiped the slate clean and opened Patriot League play with an important win at Colgate. The Mountain Hawks used their most balanced offensive attack of the season and an improved second-half defensive performance to earn their first win. Offensively, Lehigh eclipsed 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing for the first time this season, something it did four times last year. The Mountain Hawks defense opened the game with a 3-and-out, marking the first time Lehigh's opponent did not score a touchdown on its opening drive this season. Lehigh also limited Colgate to a season low-tying 10 second half points, and kept the Raiders off the scoreboard in the third quarter marking the only quarter out of 24 this season that Lehigh kept an opponent off the scoreboard. At plus-1, Lehigh also won the turnover battle for the first time this season.
Â
With 132 receiving yards at Colgate, senior wide receiver Troy Pelletier moved within 60 of Lehigh's career record, currently held by Rennie Benn '86. Pelletier broke Benn's career receptions record of 237 in Lehigh's game at Monmouth and is 27 catches short of the Patriot League record of 295 held by Fordham's Javarus Dudley.
Â
Lehigh will have its bye next weekend and the Mountain Hawks will look to buck a trend of struggling in their game prior to the bye. The Mountain Hawks are just 4-6 under Andy Coen in games leading up to their bye week. Three of the four wins came against Bucknell (2012, 2015 and 2016). The Mountain Hawks have never faced Georgetown in their game before the bye. Lehigh had week one off in 2007 and then played 11 straight weeks.
Â
Georgetown opens Patriot League play after posting a 1-4 mark in its non-league schedule. The Hoyas opened with a 16-10 win at Campbell but have dropped four straight games, including a 50-30 setback at Princeton last weekend. Georgetown raced to an early 10-0 lead before Princeton reeled off 50 unanswered points to take command of the game. The Hoyas have struggled offensively, averaging just 14.8 points and 262.4 yards per game, but Georgetown owns the Patriot League's top rush defense, yielding just 122.6 yards per game.
Â
Three quarterbacks have seen time for Georgetown. Senior Tim Barnes did not play against Princeton but Clay Norris and Gunther Johnson did. Sophomore Michael Dereus has 20 receptions for 350 yards and three touchdowns. Safety David Akere leads the Hoyas with 43 tackles and two interceptions. Khristian Tate has five tackles-for-loss and returned a fumble for a touchdown in the loss at Princeton.
Â
Lehigh and Georgetown meet for the 23rd time with the Mountain Hawks leading the series 17-5. Lehigh has won the last 16 meetings, including Patriot League-title clinching wins in 2010 and 2011. The Brown and White met the Hoyas for the first time in 1901 and the teams did not meet between 1926 and 2001.
Â
Lehigh has had little trouble with Georgetown since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001. The Mountain Hawks have outscored the Hoyas by an average of 37-12 in the last 16 games.
Â
Saturday's game kicks off just after 12:30 from Goodman Stadium. Tickets for the game are still available, and may be purchased by visiting LehighTickets.com or by calling (610) 7LU-GAME.
Â
Lehigh has its bye next weekend and will play its next two games away from Goodman Stadium. Lehigh's final two games will be at Goodman Stadium as Holy Cross visits on Nov. 11 and rival Lafayette visits for meeting 153 of the Rivalry on Nov. 18.
