Late goals give Penn 2-0 win over Lehigh

9/2/2016 5:45:00 PM | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh field hockey team hung tough against a strong Penn opponent, but the Quakers scored two late goals to defeat the Mountain Hawks, 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Lehigh senior goalkeeper Julia Ward made nine saves in goal while sophomore Lindsay Alvarez made her second defensive save of the season as the Mountain Hawks kept Penn off the scoreboard until deep into the contest. Lehigh also generated several offensive opportunities in the second half, but couldn't put one past Quakers' goalie Liz Mata.

"I thought it was a really strong performance for us. Coming off of last weekend, we set a lot of goals for ourselves and we hoped to see progress and I think we did that today," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Penn is a strong team and we hung with them. We had a lot of scoring opportunities which we weren't able to capitalize on. Overall, we are better today than we were yesterday, which is our goal moving forward."

Penn controlled play in the first half, holding a 12-0 edge in shots after 35 minutes of play. However, Ward made six saves and Alvarez made a defensive stop to help keep the Quakers off the board despite nine first-half penalty corners.

"We've been working specifically on our corner defense, which wasn't very strong against Monmouth," said Dallmeyer. "I'm proud of the way we defended Penn's corners because it's something we put emphasis on this week."

Lehigh came out of halftime and immediately generated opportunities, earning the first two penalty corners of the second half. Those corners led to a shot on goal from sophomore Teresa Carotenuo and a shot that was blocked from senior Kassidy Green.

The game remained scoreless until midway through the second half when Penn's Gina Guccione beat Ward with a low shot to give her team a 1-0 lead at the 52:09 mark.

Looking to pull even, the Mountain Hawks answered with three shots and two penalty corners over the ensuing minutes, but Penn added an insurance goal at the 68:33 mark for the 2-0 final.

Final shots were 20-6 in favor of the Quakers while Penn held a 13-5 edge in penalty corners. The Mountain Hawks finished with a 5-4 advantage in second-half corners.

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks host another Ivy League foe, Cornell, at 2 p.m.

"After today, we realize that we're capable of great things when we buckle down and focus on details," said Dallmeyer. "We're excited going into Sunday, knowing it's another strong opponent. Last weekend, we struggled putting together two good games back-to-back, so we want to put forth two strong performances this weekend. We're pleased with today's effort and we're going to make adjustments at practice to be even better Sunday."
