Lehigh drops 4-0 final to Cornell

9/4/2016 4:40:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Cornell scored an early goal and went on to beat the Lehigh field hockey team, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks recorded three first-half shots, two on goal, but couldn't get much going in the second half. Lehigh now looks ahead to a game at La Salle next Sunday before beginning Patriot League play the following Saturday (Sept. 17) vs. Bucknell.

"I was pleased with the effort," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "The effort is never in question with our team. We work really hard, but it's the details that we really struggle with under pressure. Coming off a game where we played really well against Penn, it was hard for us to hold that momentum. We easily got frustrated when we were struggling to receive and nail down the fundamentals. We were working, but we were spinning our wheels. We tried to readjust a couple times and some people started to step up, but as a unit, we couldn't find a way to be successful against this team."

The Big Red took a 1-0 lead just 28 seconds into the contest as Krysten Mayers scored her first of two goals. The Mountain Hawks nearly tied the score at the 10:25 mark as sophomore Isabel McKeown found senior Marissa Glatt in front of the cage, but Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Johnson made a diving save to her right on Glatt's low shot.

Less than two minutes later, Mayers added her second goal via a long shot from just inside the top of the circle, which snuck inside the right post.

The Mountain Hawks had another strong opportunity in the 15th minute as senior Janelle High fired a hard shot off a penalty corner, but Johnson made the stop.

Lehigh couldn't get much going offensively the rest of the game, but the Mountain Hawks' defense held the Big Red off the scoreboard for a stretch of 35:45. However, Cornell went on to add second-half goals, at the 47:40 and 62:13 marks to account for the 4-0 final.

Final shots were 14-3 in favor of the Big Red while Cornell held a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Julia Ward made four saves across Johnson, who made two.

"I am a believer that in order to be the best, you have to play the best," said Dallmeyer. "This was arguably one of our toughest weekends playing Penn and Cornell back-to-back. It's great for us to be able to see this level of hockey and know that we can compete. The disappointing part today was that we knew we could have done better and we were not able to execute under pressure. That's the most disappointing part walking away."

The Mountain Hawks return to action next Sunday at La Salle. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.
