Mountain Hawks drop overtime heartbreaker at La Salle, 2-1

9/11/2016 3:02:00 PM | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Senior Kassidy Green opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the game, but La Salle came back to beat the Lehigh field hockey team on Sunday afternoon, 2-1 in overtime. Despite neither team scoring for the final 63:16 of regulation, the game saw plenty of chances from both sides, but both goalkeepers stood tall. Lehigh senior netminder Julia Ward finished with eight saves on the day.
"I'm disappointed in the way we executed in pressure situations today," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We worked hard and prepared for a game like this and we were not able to execute the way we executed in practice, which was a challenge. I also think confidence comes into play in pressure situations. This is the first overtime game and we were not able to play confidently and strong."

Green gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead at the 7:48 mark as she took a feed from sophomore Teresa Carotenuto and fired a low shot that beat La Salle goalkeeper Rachel Hartman.

The Explorers evened the score at 16:44, just moments after a penalty corner. La Salle continued to pressure, leading to a penalty stroke later in the first half, but Ward dove to her right to make the stop and keep the score tied.

Lehigh gained momentum towards the end of the half, generating a pair of penalty corners over the final nine minutes, but couldn't convert.

The second half saw 11 combined shots, 10 of which were on goal. Ward stood tall in the cage, making four saves while junior Jackie Renda made a defensive save for the Mountain Hawks. La Salle's Rachel Hartman made five second-half saves, but the game went to overtime tied at one.

It took just 21 seconds into the extra session for the game-winning goal as a La Salle rush downfield led to the game-winner and the heartbreaking defeat for the Mountain Hawks.

For the game, the Explorers held a 14-8 edge in shots and 13-8 advantage in penalty corners. Ward finished with eight saves while Hartman made seven.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they host Bucknell in their Patriot League opener. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.

"We'll be happy to be back at home on our turf," said Dallmeyer. "This is going to be a very skillful game, and a fast-paced game. We're preparing to make sure we're moving consistently and we're tightening up our skills from today."
