BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomore Teresa Carotenuto scored a late goal to give Lehigh a chance down the stretch, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't pull even as they dropped their Patriot League opener to Bucknell, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh fired three shots on goal within the first 90 seconds of the second half, but a Bison goal at the 42:44 mark proved to be the game-winner.
Â
"It was a really tough loss because this was the best game that we've played all season," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "To see that energy and focus from practice translate into a competitive game was a big step forward for us. It was tough to be in the game, but not come out with the win."
Â
The beginning of the first half saw just two shots within the first 10 minutes. The Bison got on the board at the 15:40 mark as junior Laura Yuh made a big defensive save to prevent a goal, but a penalty stroke was called and Anna Wills converted to give Bucknell a 1-0 lead.
Â
There was only one shot on goal the rest of the half, taken by Carotenuto, but Bison goalkeeper Emily Finn made the save.
Â
Lehigh came out of halftime with a vengeance as Carotenuto and sophomore Isabel McKeown recorded consecutive shots on goal within the first minute, leading to a penalty corner.
Â
"I was pleased we were able to execute the adjustments we talked about at halftime," said Dallmeyer. "We had confidence in that second half, knowing we could compete with a high-level team and we were very close to finishing."
Â
Five minutes later, McKeown had a glittering opportunity as senior Gabby Tofig sprung her in all alone on goal, but Finn came out strong to deflect the ball away before McKeown could get a shot off. Not long after, Bucknell doubled its lead as Nicole Rupnik made a deflection off a penalty corner to give the Bison a 2-0 advantage at 42:44.
Â
Lehigh wouldn't back down, cutting the deficit in half at the 65:35 mark as senior Marissa Glatt made a nifty pass across to Caroteunto, who put home her second goal of the season. Bucknell responded by creating four penalty corners over the remaining minutes to wrap up the 2-1 final.
Â
Final shots were 19-9 in favor of Bucknell while the Bison held a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Julia Ward made one save in the first half, before being replaced by freshman Paige Innarella who made four stops in her collegiate debut.
Â
"This was the best performance that Laura Yuh had all season, playing really confidently and stopping a lot of fast break plays," said Dallmeyer. "Amanda Boyer was moved into the midfield position and did a really great job there as well."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action in 24 hours as they host Providence at 1 p.m.
Â
"We need to score goals. We can't win unless we're executing in front of the net, and that's a huge focus point for tomorrow," said Dallmeyer. "It's a quick turnaround, so we need to buckle down to be as focused as possible and come out with a great performance tomorrow."
