TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Lehigh volleyball team wrapped up its trip to the Bama Bash with a hard-fought loss in three sets against a tough Alabama team on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Kelly Bennett led the Mountain Hawks (3-6) with eight kills on the day to go along with two digs and an assist. Sophomore Tori Hemsath and freshman Emily Poole chipped in offensively with six kills each.
Sophomore Megan Polak finished with a team-leading 24 assists on the day to go along with four digs. Senior Mariah Brantley paced the squad with eight digs, while Emily Develle and Hannah Chalk each tallied six.
The match started with a closely contested first set as neither team managed to break away. The Crimson Tide (8-2) looked like they may run away as they took their largest lead to that point with a 17-14 advantage, but Lehigh won three of the next four points with kills by Donaldson and Hemsath to pull within one at 18-17. Unfortunately, Alabama would run off seven unanswered points with three kills and a service ace to win the first set 25-17.
The Mountain Hawks opened up a 5-2 lead to start the second set with kills from Bennett and Poole, but Alabama erased the deficit and took 6-5 lead with a run of four-straight points. The Crimson Tide took the largest lead of the set when they went up 24-20, but Lehigh did not back down as Bennett scored a kill and Develle recorded a service ace to cut the deficit to 24-22. The Mountain Hawks tried to keep the momentum rolling, but a service error gave the Crimson Tide the final point they needed to win the set and take a 2-0 match lead.
The Crimson Tide came out rolling in the third set as they built up a 6-2 lead and forced Lehigh to take a timeout. Out of the break, Alabama continued to find success and extended the lead to 13-7 to force another Mountain Hawk timeout to try to kill the momentum. The Tide later went on a 5-0 run to push the lead to 22-12 and from there, cruised to a 25-15 victory in the third set to complete the sweep.
The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on Tuesday when they once again hit the road and travel to Villanova for a 7 p.m. match.
