Lehigh to open home slate with Crosstown Invitational beginning Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team will make their home debut this weekend when the Mountain Hawks welcome Fairleigh Dickinson, Providence and Saint Peter's for the Crosstown Invitational. The Mountain Hawks will once again co-host the tournament with Lafayette with four matches being played at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Saturday and four matches being played in Easton.

Lehigh opened its season with a trio of five set matches last weekend at the CCSU Invitational in New Britain, Conn. The Mountain Hawks suffered heartbreaking five-set losses to Fordham and Central Connecticut State before rallying for a 3-2 victory over Iona in their final match.

Sophomore libero Emily Develle was named to the All-Tournament Team after recording a team-best 52 digs in three matches, while adding five service aces. The trio of senior Katie Jennison, junior Kelly Bennett and sophomore Victoria Hemsath each averaged more than 10 kills per match, with Hemsath leading the way with 53 in the opening weekend. Sophomore Megan Polak topped the Mountain Hawks with 76 assists while junior Stephanie Stieber chipped in 62. Senior Mariah Brantley led Lehigh with seven aces to go along with 35 digs. Bennett was Lehigh's top performer at the net with 11 total blocks.

Lehigh's five-member freshman class is expected to debut this weekend.

Saint Peter's and Providence will open Lehigh's half of the Crosstown Invitational with a 3 p.m. match Friday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks will then face Providence at 7 p.m.

Providence opened its season with a 2-1 showing at the San Jose State Tournament last weekend, blanking Manhattan and UMass-Lowell while losing to the host Spartans. The Friars were 10-22 last season.

Lehigh is 2-0 all-time against Providence with wins in 2003, and most recently a 3-2 win in the 2009 Crosstown Invitational.

Saint Peter's will open its season against Providence on Friday before taking on Lehigh on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Peacocks were picked 10th in the MAAC Preseason Poll following a 4-24 campaign. This is Saint Peter's' fourth straight year playing in the Crosstown Invitational. Lehigh is 14-4 all-time against the Peacocks.

The Mountain Hawks will close out the Crosstown Invitational against Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday at 4 p.m. The Knights opened their season with three straight-set losses at Bucknell's Tournament, losing to the Bison plus East Carolina and Canisius. FDU went 10-19 a season ago. Lehigh leads the all-time series versus FDU 13-12 with the most recent win coming last season.

Lehigh will offer live stats for all four matches played at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Saturday's matches will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.

Following the Crosstown Invitational, Lehigh will head to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to play in the Bama Bash, Sept. 9-10, where the Mountain Hawks will face Southern Miss, Northwestern State and Alabama.Â
