Lehigh drops 5-0 final to Monmouth

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Monmouth scored first and wouldn't look back as the Lehigh field hockey team dropped a 5-0 final on a sunny and warm Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks fired six shots on cage, including the game's first two shots, but were unable to find the back of the net.
"Growth is something that's important to this program right now and making sure that we're learning from all the opportunities to play strong opponents," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We definitely struggled to execute the details of the game today - our 1 vs. 1 defense, our movement and possession of the ball and our finishing in front of the net. These are things we've been working on for a while - several weeks since the beginning of the preseason - so we need to make sure we're not allowing the strength of the opponent to hinder our ability to execute those details."
Â
Monmouth finished the first half with a 9-3 edge in shots, but all three Lehigh shots were on goal. Just over five minutes into the game, the Mountain Hawks tallied the game's first two shots, both off the stick of senior Gabby Tofig in succession.
Â
After more than 11 scoreless minutes, Monmouth's Rachel Konowal broke the scoreless deadlock, giving her time a 1-0 lead at the 11:57 mark. The goal came just moments after a penalty corner.
Â
Monmouth scored twice more in the first half, the second coming off a penalty corner and the third via a deflection.
Â
Monmouth added to its lead with two goals, at 52:07 and 55:32, both off corners. Lehigh did earn several quality opportunities in the second half, firing five shots (three on goal). One of the best chances came in the 45th minute when freshman Amanda Boyer had two shots on goal, including one which ended in a defensive save. Tofig's initial shot towards goal got behind goalkeeper Christen Piersanti. Boyer was there, but Monmouth defender Sydney Southard was there to deny the Lehigh attacker.
Â
Final shots were 20-8 in favor of Monmouth while penalty corners were 10-2 in favor of the Hawks. Senior Julia Ward made eight saves for Lehigh while Piersanti had five stops for Monmouth.
Â
"I was really happy with the way the team worked until the end of the game," said Dallmeyer. "Monmouth was a phenomenal team and they put a lot of pressure on us defensively, but we were still able to get counterattacks, even towards the end of the game. I was happy we kept fighting and kept making runs at goal until the end."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday when they travel to Penn to face the Quakers. Gametime is set for 3:30 p.m.
