BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Goals from senior Marissa Glatt and sophomore Teresa Carotenuto, combined with a strong defensive effort, gave the Lehigh field hockey team an exciting 2-1 season-opening win over Rider on a hot and humid Friday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The win marked Lehigh's first over the Broncs since the 2007 season, snapping a six-game losing streak. The win also came in new Caitlin Dallmeyer's first game as Lehigh head coach.
"This win is really big for the program because we've talked about how hard we need to work to be able to compete with teams like this, teams we haven't beaten recently," said Dallmeyer. "We talked about how we need to make sure we're playing to our strengths and not really focusing on their playing style. I felt like we did that today."
Â
Rider fired the game's first two shots, but Lehigh's first shot of the season found the back of the cage. Off a penalty corner, senior Kassidy Green made a pass to her left and Glatt put a low shot towards cage, giving Lehigh a 1-0 lead 15:02 into the game.
Â
The Broncs quickly responded, evening the score just over two minutes later, also converting a deflection off a penalty corner.
Â
With less than 90 seconds until halftime, the Mountain Hawks took a 2-1 advantage as Carotenuto made a deflection off a pass from senior Janelle High.
Â
Rider finished the first half with a 12-3 edge in shots and 3-1 advantage in penalty corners, but senior goalkeeper Julia Ward made six saves, while sophomore Lindsay Alvarez tallied a defensive stop, to keep Lehigh in front, 2-1.
Â
An even second half saw just seven total shots, but Rider fired four of them on goal and Ward came up with some big saves. The Mountain Hawks' best chance came off a penalty corner when sophomore Lauren Dice's drag flick was stopped by Rider goalkeeper Viorrey Baker to keep Lehigh's lead at one.
Â
The Mountain Hawks were able to hold onto the big 2-1 victory.
Â
"I was really happy to see how we reacted to the game pressure," said Dallmeyer. "They have some really skilled players, especially in the midfield and there were times when we lost sight of those players and they were able to capitalize. We were able to make some adjustments and I'm proud of the way the team played in the second half, knowing we were up and had a win in our hands if we could sustain the pressure."
Â
Final shots were 17-5 in favor of Rider while the Broncs held an 8-3 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with 10 saves, across Baker who made two.
Â
"Lindsay Alvarez stepped up really big for us," said Dallmeyer. "We haven't seen her play like that since the time I've been at Lehigh. We knew she was capable and she's been doing really well at practice. She's definitely a gamer and she came up big for us. Julia Ward kept us in the game. It was really nice to see her perform at a high level."
Â
Lehigh looks to keep the momentum going in just two days when the Mountain Hawks host Monmouth on Sunday at 12 p.m.
