JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three members of the Lehigh track and field teams are in the Sunshine State and set to compete Thursday-Saturday in the First Round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day long event from May 26-28 will see senior Gabrielle Wardle compete in the javelin on Thursday, junior Courtney Avery in the high jump late Friday afternoon, and junior Lucas Warning rounding out the competition on Saturday evening in the shot put.

Wardle will get things rolling for Lehigh at this year's championships on Thursday at noon in the first of three flights of the javelin throw. Wardle is the East Region's 38th seed with her qualifying throw of 45.70 meters coming in her Patriot League Championship victory on May 7. Wardle captured the first three league championships of her career this year in the long jump, javelin and heptathlon. She most recently took sixth place in the high jump at the ECAC Championships and placed seventh out of 31 in the javelin at the Penn Relays. This will be the career first trip to the NCAA Championships for Wardle, who did not pick up the javelin until her freshman season at Lehigh.

Avery will take flight second on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the high jump, where she enters as the No. 20 seed. This will be her third straight appearance in the NCAA First Round, where last year she finished in 13th place (tied-school record of 1.79m), just one spot shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. She is coming off her second straight outdoor Patriot League championship in the high jump (fifth overall) as well as a victory in the Championship of America high jump at the Penn Relays. She took third place at last weekend's ECAC Championships and was victorious in four other high jumps at various meets through the spring.

Warning will close out the weekend for Lehigh in Saturday evening's shot put, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. Warning, the 29th seed, will be part of the second of four flights in the event. His season-best qualifying shot put of 17.60m came in his win at the Lafayette 7-Way Invitational on March 26. Warning won his first Patriot League Championship with his toss of 17.37 meters on May 7 and won the same event at the Lehigh Games (17.45m) on April 30. Those three marks rank as the three best outdoor shot puts in the Patriot League this season. He has won the shot put at five different meets this season and also finished 13th at the Penn Relays. He set the school's indoor benchmark of 17.62 meters this past January. This will be his first trip to the NCAA preliminaries.

All participants in Jacksonville this weekend rank as the top 48 of each event in the East Region. The top 12 placers in each event this weekend will qualify for the final round of the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 8-11, where they will be joined by the top 12 placers from this weekend's West Region preliminary action in Lawrence, Kansas.
