
Mountain Hawks sit fifth after 36 holes at Patriot League Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – With freshman Johnny Hsu leading the way, the Lehigh men's golf team sits in fifth place out of eight teams after the opening 36 holes of the Patriot League Championship Saturday at the Naval Academy Golf Club.

Hsu's second round one under par 70 was the best of the day for the Mountain Hawks, who started fast in Saturday's morning round before finishing at 300, leaving Lehigh in a three-way tie for fourth after 18 holes. While three of the eight schools broke 300 in the morning, six of the eight shot lower than 300 in the afternoon. The Mountain Hawks shot 296 in the second 18 and sit at 28 over par 596 heading into the final day.

The Mountain Hawks are six strokes behind fourth place Bucknell and one ahead of sixth place Lafayette. Army West Point came out with back-to-back rounds of even par 284 to take the 36 hole lead at 568. The Black Knights lead Navy by 12 strokes, while Loyola is third, 17 shots off the pace.

Hsu battled back from an opening round 77 to card three birdies and just two bogeys on the way to his afternoon 70. He is tied for 11th place at 147. Hsu led the Mountain Hawks with 24 pars on day one.

Sophomore Billy Johns was tied for sixth after an opening round 72 but shot 76 in the afternoon and is one stroke behind Hsu in a tie for 14th place. Johns started his first round strong with three birdies in his first nine holes.

Freshman Eamon Marone rallied from a forgettable 80 in the morning to shoot 73 in the afternoon. Marone led Lehigh with five birdies on the day and is tied for 29th at 153.

Two strokes behind Marone is senior David Olexson, who carded rounds of 78 and 77 and is tied for 33rd place.

Freshman Max Redetzke opened strong with a 73 Saturday morning but dropped into a tie for 40th at 159 after an 86 in the afternoon. Rounding out Lehigh's team is freshman Lee Hammerschmidt, who sits in 46th place at 167 (82-85).

Army West Point's Dean Sakata holds the individual lead after two rounds in the 60s. Sakata sits at seven under par 135 (66-69) to lead Bucknell's JP Rafterty (71-67) by three strokes. Lafayette's Art Griffin sits in third at even par.

Saturday's afternoon round featured just the second and third aces in Patriot League Championship history. Navy's Thomas Fricke scored a hole-in-one on the 214-yard fourth hole, while Colgate's Ryan Allison aced the 161 yard 17th.

The Patriot League Championship concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes from the Naval Academy Golf Club. Lehigh will play with Bucknell and Lafayette and will go off the 10th hole beginning at 9 a.m.
