BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will travel to Annapolis, Md. this weekend to compete in the Patriot League Championship at the Naval Academy Golf Club. First tee times for the 54-hole championship are set for 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Naval Academy Golf Course plays to a par 71 at 6,611 yards from the longest tees.

The Patriot League championship features a play six, score four format. The individual champion will be named the Patriot League Golfer of the Year, while the highest finishing freshman receives the sport's Rookie of the Year honor. Head coaches from all eight participating schools will vote on the Patriot League Coach of the Year award.

There will also be a 10-member All-Patriot League Team based on finish at the championship. The top five finishers (including ties) make the first-team squad, and all remaining finishers up to 10th place (including ties) qualify for the second-team.

Four of the six competitors for the Mountain Hawks will be freshmen, as rookies Lee Hammerschmidt, Jonathan Hsu, Eamon Marone and Max Redetzke will look to anchor Lehigh in their first championship appearances. They will be joined by sophomore Billy Johns and senior David Olexson. Lehigh last won the title in 2013 when the Mountain Hawks hosted the tournament at Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks finished third in 2014 and fifth last year. Johns will be playing in his second straight championship, while Olexson will compete in his third. Johns tied for 12th place last year with a 224 (75-79-70) and Olexson tied for 27th with a 233 (76-78-79).

In their final regular season match of the season, Lehigh fell to Lafayette by three strokes at Silver Creek Country Club by a score 311 to 308. Marone led the way for Lehigh with a 74, as Johns and Hsu tied for second on the team with respective scores of 78.

The Mountain Hawks enter the Patriot League Championship with two second place finishes and a third place team finish in four previous spring tournaments. Lehigh also closed its fall season with a second place finish at the Lehigh Invitational in October.

Lehigh opened its spring with a second place finish in the four-team Patriot Spring Intercollegiate and was also a runner-up at the 24-team Wildcat Invitational hosted by Villanova at White Manor Country Club. This spring the Mountain Hawks finished sixth out of 19 teams at the Lafayette Invitational and most recently, third out of 14 teams at La Salle's Finegan Invitational on April 18.

Johns, Hsu and Marone have all led Lehigh with strong individual performances in the spring. In addition to leading Lehigh in Tuesday's stroke play competition versus Lafayette, Marone was Lehigh's top finisher at the Lafayette invitational. Johns lost the Patriot Spring Intercollegiate in a playoff while Hsu led Lehigh at its other two spring tournaments, tying for second at the Finegan Invitational.

Loyola is the two-time defending team champion and will bid to become the first team to win three straight team titles since Navy did so from 1998-2001. Lehigh has won three team titles (1996, 1997, 2013) and has had two players win the individual title: Bowen Osborn in 2001 and current head coach Henry D'Alberto in 1996. The Patriot League team champion will qualify for the NCAA Regionals, as will the individual champion if he is not a member of the championship team.

Action at the Patriot League Championship begins Saturday at 8 a.m. from the Naval Academy Golf Course. Lehigh will be paired with host Navy on day one and will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 8:54 a.m. In the afternoon, Lehigh and Navy will go off the first hole beginning at 1:24 p.m. Sunday's final round begins at 8 a.m. with the top six teams beginning their rounds at 9 a.m.
