Lehigh heads to Boston U. Wednesday for key Patriot League doubleheader

4/26/2016 12:37:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a series of postponements the Lehigh softball team will finally face off with Boston University in a Wednesday doubleheader at the BU Softball Field. The series was originally scheduled for April 2-3 but was postponed after heavy rains during the first inning of the series opener.

The revised schedule had Lehigh and Boston University set to play a doubleheader on Tuesday with a single game to follow Wednesday. Expected inclement weather in Boston on Tuesday pushed the doubleheader back a day. The final game of the series, if necessary, will be made up at a date to be determined.

Lehigh comes in at 30-11 overall and 8-1 in the Patriot League but the Mountain Hawks will have their hands full with a Terrier squad that has won six straight and seven of eight overall.

The Mountain Hawks were off from Patriot League play this past weekend and are coming off a doubleheader split with UMBC Saturday at Leadership Park. Lehigh dropped the first game 2-0 and was trailing 1-0 late in the second before a four-run sixth inning lifted the Mountain Hawks to a 4-1 win.

Senior Morgan Decker's two-run single gave Lehigh a 3-1 advantage after a Retriever error allowed Lehigh to tie the game. The four-run inning supported junior Vicky Lattanzio who pitched well in her first start of the season. Lattanzio allowed a run on four hits in a complete game effort to earn her first victory of the season.

Last week Lehigh went 3-1 in non-league action despite totaling just 12 runs and 17 hits over four games. Decker and classmates MacKenzie Velasquez and Alexis Watanabe each had three hits in last week's action, while Decker and Lattanzio both drove in two runs.

Velasquez has been Lehigh's top hitter in Patriot League play with a .414 average and eight runs batted in. Lehigh owns sweeps over Lafayette and Colgate and in its last league action won two out of three at Army West Point. Decker leads Lehigh overall, hitting .427 with 16 doubles, six home runs and 34 RBIs.

Junior Christine Campbell has led the way for Lehigh in the circle with a 17-6 overall record and a 2.48 ERA. In six league appearances, Campbell is 6-0 with a 0.76 ERA. Freshman Emily Sorem leads the Mountain Hawks with 87 strikeouts, while Lattanzio could see an expanded role in the circle.

Boston University's recent winning ways have lifted the Terriers back to 19-20 overall. BU sits three games behind Lehigh in the league standings at 5-4. Over the weekend, the Terriers outscored Lafayette 15-1 in a three-game sweep. BU has also been swept at Army West Point and took two games against Bucknell.

Senior Melanie Russell was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week after going 4-0 with a save in five outings last week. Russell threw 22.2 scoreless innings with 32 strikeouts and no walks. The strong week improved Russell's record to 7-7 and lowered her ERA to 2.62. Lauren Hynes has been Boston's top pitcher with a 10-10 record and 2.50 ERA in 123.1 innings.

BU's offense is led by Brittany Younan who holds a .377 average and 23 RBIs. Moriah Connolly is next at .343 and has a team-best 26 runs scored.

Boston University is in just its third season in the Patriot League. The Terriers lead the all-time series versus Lehigh 5-4 but the Mountain Hawks own a 4-2 edge in Patriot League regular season play over the last two years. This series matches the last two Patriot League Tournament champions. BU took 2-of-3 from Lehigh in the Mountain Hawks' last visit to Boston in 2014. Lehigh swept three games at Kaufman Field last season.

Wednesday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. from the BU Softball Field.

Following Wednesday's games, Lehigh will continue a critical week of Patriot League road games with three games at Bucknell, April 30-May 1.
