Lehigh falls three strokes short of Lafayette in final tune-up before Patriot League Championship

HELLERTOWN, Pa. – In its final tune-up before this weekend's Patriot League Championship, the Lehigh men's golf team was edged by three strokes by rival Lafayette in stroke play Tuesday at Silver Creek Country Club. Freshman Eamon Marone shot 74 to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 311 in the play six, score four format, but Lafayette answered with a 308 to win the head-to-head battle.
 
Marone's 74 was the second lowest round of the day behind Lafayette's Chad Bell who shot one over par 73.
 
Both teams had two players shoot 78, with sophomore Billy Johns and freshman Johnny Hsu hitting the number for Lehigh and Travis Ricca and James Croney posting the score for Lafayette.
 
Lehigh's fourth qualifying score was an 81 turned in by freshman max Redetzke, while Patrick McGinley's 79 helped create the three-stroke margin for Lafayette.
 
Senior David Olexson and freshman Lee Hammerschmidt were the other two scoring players for Lehigh, with Olexson shooting 82 and Hammerschmidt 83. Freshman Tim Wolak competed as an individual and shot 85.
 
Lafayette's other two scorers were Drew Petri, who carded an 81 and Ryan Krechel, who shot 85.
 
Tuesday's stroke play contest was the final scheduled competition between Lehigh and Lafayette for the 2015-16 academic year. Lehigh posted a 27-5 record against Lafayette in competitions across all varsity sports.
 
Next up for both schools will be the Patriot League Championship, Saturday and Sunday at the Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md.
