Lehigh opens USF Spring Break Tournament with two wins Friday

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Lehigh opened up play at the USF Spring Break Tournament with two very different wins on Friday. First the Mountain Hawk bats pounded out 17 hits in a 10-5 win over Rutgers, then freshman Emily Sorem fired a two-hit shutout as Lehigh blanked Quinnipiac 4-0. With the two victories, Lehigh improves to 14-5 on the season and 7-2 on its spring break trip to Florida.
Senior Morgan Decker again paced the offense going 5-for-7 with two doubles and two RBIs in the two games, including a 4-for-4 effort against the Scarlet Knights. Freshman Ashley Quidolit added four hits as Lehigh had a balanced day where eight different players drove in runs.
Lehigh's 17 hits against Rutgers marked a season-high. The Mountain Hawks used a six run fourth inning to break a 3-3 tie.
A RBI double from Decker and a run-scoring single by senior MacKenzie Velasquez gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers (12-15) took a 3-2 lead after two innings after scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first and then taking the lead with Stephanie Huang's two-run double in the second.
Junior Vicky Lattanzio's RBI single tied the game at 3-3 in the third before Lehigh broke things open with the six run fourth inning. Sophomore Lindsay Phillips led off the fourth with a single and scored on a triple by Quidolit. Senior Alexis Watanabe then singled home Quidolit to give Lehigh a 5-3 lead. Decker's third hit of the game put two runners on, and two batters later sophomore Katie Schultz came through with a RBI single to score Watanabe. Velasquez followed with a RBI double and senior Jessica Calvini capped the outburst with a two-run single.
Quidolit led off the fifth with a double to right and Decker brought her home with her fourth hit of the game, with a single down the right field line. Rutgers got two runs back on a Sierra Maddox home run in the fifth but Lehigh picked up its second win in six days against a Big Ten opponent.
Junior Christine Campbell earned her seventh win of the season, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out three and walked one.
The Scarlet Knights employed four pitchers, with Whitney Jones taking the loss after allowing four earned runs in an inning of work.
Pitching dominated Lehigh's second game of the day against Quinnipiac (6-10) with Sorem allowing just two hits, while striking out five and walking three to improve to 7-3 on the season. Quinnipiac leadoff hitter Sarah Heimbach had both hits, singles in the fourth and sixth innings, and also drew a walk.
Lehigh had just seven hits against the Bobcats, coming from seven different players. A walk, a single, a fielder's choice, and an error allowed freshman Brianna Gerhardt to score the game's first run in the fourth. Freshmen contributed to Lehigh's second run as Jen Stoll led off the fifth with a single, moved to second on a ground out and then scored on a single to right by Quidolit.
Junior Ashley Cole capped the scoring with her second home run of the year, a two-run shot, in the sixth inning.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their spring break trip to Florida with two more games Saturday. Lehigh will face Northwestern at 9:30 a.m. and Marist at 11:45 a.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
