Lehigh splits two run-rule games on day two of UNCG Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lehigh's hot hitting from Friday's opening day of the season continued into Saturday's first game at the UNCG Invitational as the Mountain Hawks pounded out 13 hits in a 14-2, five-inning win over Youngstown State. The Mountain Hawks' bats were quieted in their second game of the day as two UNC-Greensboro pitchers limited Lehigh to just three hits in an 8-0, five-inning setback to the host Spartans.
With Saturday's split, Lehigh sits at 3-1 with one more game left in its season-opening tournament. Senior Carissa Zito and sophomore Katie Schultz both went 3-for-3 against the Penguins with Zito driving in four runs. Lehigh scored multiple runs in four of the five innings against Youngstown State for the Mountain Hawks' second run-rule win over the Penguins in as many days.
Lehigh plated three first inning runs against Youngstown State. Sophomore Nicole Yozzo led off with a single to left and after moving to second on a sacrifice, scored on a single to left by senior Morgan Decker. With two outs and runners on second and third, Zito singled to center, bringing home two more runs, to put the Mountain Hawks up 3-0.
Youngstown State pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the third on a Maria Lacatena two-run home run to left field off junior Christine Campbell. Lacatena home runs accounted for five of the six runs yielded by Lehigh against the Penguins over the last two days.
The Mountain Hawks broke the game open with six runs in the top of the third as 11 batters came to the plate. The first three Lehigh batters reached base and Zito came up with the bases loaded and drove in another run with a single to left field. A RBI groundout by sophomore Lindsay Phillips put Lehigh up 5-2 and two batters later, junior Ashley Cole added a two-run single to put Lehigh up by five. A two-out RBI single by senior Alexis Watanabe and a bases-loaded walk to junior Vicky Lattanzio put Lehigh up 9-2 after two and a half innings.
Lehigh tacked on two more runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth, thanks to Zito's third RBI single of the game plus RBI from Phillips and Schultz.
Campbell earned her second win in as many days, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings. She walked three and struck out four before giving way to Lattanzio, who closed the game with a scoreless fifth inning.
Yozzo and Decker finished with two hits apiece in the opener, while Cole tallied three RBI.
In game two, the Mountain Hawks bats were stymied by Stephanie Bryden, who threw four shutout innings and kept Lehigh hitless into the fourth inning when Lattanzio and senior Jessica Calvini tallied back-to-back singles. Bryden set down the side on a fly out and ground out to end the threat.
UNCG (6-5) broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Nicole Thomas and Danielle Vega and a two-run double by Sidney Grkman.
Thomas and Vega struck again in the fourth with a two-run double and RBI single, respectively to increase the Spartans' lead to 7-0. A Rachael McCaskey one-out RBI single in the fifth ended the game via the eight-run rule.
Freshman Emily Sorem (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Bryden allowed the two singles in four innings while striking out two. Senior MacKenzie Velasquez registered Lehigh's other hit, a one out single in the fifth.
UNCG finished with 12 hits, as Thomas and Vega combined to go 5-for-5.
