Lehigh Track and Field to Compete in Pair of Weekend Meets

Covert Classic Live Results (Mitchell Timing)
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh track programs will be hosting their fourth and final home meet of the season Saturday at the 24th Annual John Covert Classic. The event, named for the longtime Lehigh track and cross country coach, will feature Lafayette, Villanova, La Salle, East Stroudsburg, Moravian and Muhlenberg among others. Seven Mountain Hawks will also compete at the Thundering Herd Invitational at Marshall University this weekend.
Both teams are coming off a string of strong performances recently, including Monday's Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet. The men captured a 104-77 win, picking up the maximum number of points possible in seven different events. Junior Ryan Cooneycaptured a new personal best time to win the mile run, which helped him earn the honor of Lehigh's Track Athlete of the Meet. JuniorLucas Warningwas named the Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the shot put at 17.37 meters, a distance just short of his own school record that he set at the Angry Birds Invite on January 16. Daniel Boardman also took first place in the long jump and high jump, setting new season-highs in both events.
Last season, Lehigh had an impressive showing at the Covert Classic, recording four first place finishes, while also hauling in a pair of IC4A qualifying times at the Armory Invitational on the same day. Trevor Knowles set a new Rauch Fieldhouse record in the pole vault (4.65m), and Fritz Isaac and Daniel Reichenbach finished second and third in the triple jump.
On the women's side, ten different athletes picked up wins in a strong showing. All told, the women scored the maximum eight points in 10 events en route to a 115-66 win. JuniorKatie Hatlerwas named Lehigh's Track Athlete of the Meet after picking up two individual victories in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash.Brittany Le Jouanwas honored as the Field Athlete of the Meet for the Mountain Hawks after winning the triple jump and setting a new PR with her second place finish in the high jump. The Mountain Hawks took three of the top four spots in the pole vault, and won both throwing and all three jumping events.
Elizabeth Weiler highlighted last year's Covert Classic by breaking Lehigh's school record in the 5,000 meter run, completing the race in IC4A qualifying time of 16:55.56. Courtney Avery (1.75m) and Gabrielle Wardle (1.70m) also hit IC4A/ECAC qualifying marks in the high jump.
The second annual Thundering Herd Invitational will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex in Huntington, W.V. Ryan Givens and Trevor Knowles will be representing the men's team at the meet while the women will send Gabrielle Wardle, Olivia Reinold, Tyler Bannister, Courtney Avery and Brittany Le Jouan. Both Avery and Le Jouan will take part in the high jump, with the other five all competing in the multis. Assistant coach Brooke Astor will also be competing at Marshall this weekend. Friday's meet will get underway at 5 p.m. and continue at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children 17 and under.
