BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh's men's and women's track and field teams will finally host their dual meet with rival Lafayette at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 at Rauch Fieldhouse. The meet, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, was pushed to Sunday, and then to Monday due to the winter storm that crushed the Lehigh Valley this weekend. The women will be seeking their seventh win in a row over the Leopards. The men have won the indoor rivalry two years in a row, and four of the last five dating back to 2011.
Both Lehigh teams were honored with major awards from the Patriot League this week, following the Angry Birds Invitational last Saturday. Lucas Warning was named the league's Male Field Athlete of the Week after setting a new program record in the shot put at 17.41 meters, breaking the school's oldest indoor mark from 1972 by just one centimeter. Kiana Wright was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Week after winning the triple jump and coming in second in the long jump. In addition, Maura Henderson was named the league's Rookie of the Week after she posted a sixth place time of 5:13.36 in the mile run and a 12th place tally in the 800 meter run (2:21.96).
Competing for the first time this season, Fritz Isaac took home the top spot in the 60m hurdles and set a new PR in the 60 meter dash last weekend at the Angry Birds. He was joined by Trevor Knowles and Robert Hugin in the top four of the 60m hurdles. Knowles also took third in the pole vault, placing one spot behind teammate, Tyler John.
The women's side saw a number of personal records fall last weekend, including throwers Sarah Cassidy and Amanda Youngblood in the shot put, and Michaela Bubak in the weight throw. On the track, Arielle Weiner (5,000m run) and Katie Hatler (60m hurdles) each captured second place finishes, and Liyala Dickens took third place in the 200 meter dash.
"In both genders, our field events and our hurdles are really strong," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We're a little deeper in those events on the women's side than the men's side. We have some great distance kids too. Our guys are a little bit young, but pretty talented and we saw some of that in the performances at the Patriot League Championships in cross country."
So far this season, Lafayette has competed at the Lehigh Fast Times Meet, the Rutgers Invitational, Spartan Regional Preview and the Great Dane Classic. Senior Jarrel Bobb placed second overall, first among D1 runners in the 200 meter dash at the Fast Times Meet in December. The Leopard women's 4x800 relay team also took second place, finishing 6.55 seconds behind Lehigh's 'A' team.
"They have some very strong individuals on their team and those kids are going to be outstanding in the conference, like Jarrel Bobb and Devin Smith," Utesch said. "But I think we have a little more depth than they do. I'm sure it will be competitive and a great meet, but I think we will come out on top."
At the Rutgers Invite, Bobb finished second in the men's 400 meter dash, hitting an IC4A qualifying time of 48.26 seconds. Smith placed third in the women's 200 dash at Rutgers, finishing just two-hundredths off her school record of 25.16. She also set a new personal best mark of 7.76 in the 60m dash finals and had an IC4A qualifying time at the Great Dane Classic.
"I feel pretty good about where our team is. It's the Lehigh-Lafayette dual met and anything can happen," Utesch concluded.
All of Monday's action is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. from Rauch Fieldhouse. Check back to Lehighsports.com for the latest information on schedule/timing updates.
