BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three members of the Lehigh Track and Field teams have been honored by the Patriot League for their performances at Saturday's Angry Birds Invitational. Juniors Lucas Warning and Kiana Wright have been named the league's Male and Female Field Athletes of the Week, and freshman Maura Henderson has been named the Female Rookie of the Week.
Warning highlighted the men's meet on Saturday by breaking Lehigh's oldest indoor track record with his shot put of 17.41 meters. The mark outdid the school's previous benchmark of 17.40 meters set by John Hill in 1972. The distance also hit an IC4A/ECAC qualifying mark and was the fifth-longest toss in the Mid-Atlantic Region so far this season.
Wright competed in a pair of events on Saturday, taking first place overall in the triple jump, tying a personal-record with a leap of 10.97 meters. She also set a new personal record with her long jump of 5.38 meters, which was good enough for second place in the field of 21 competitors.
Henderson grabs Rookie of the Week accolades after posting a sixth place time of 5:13.36 in the mile run and a 12th place tally in the 800 meter run (2:21.96). It was the first time this season the freshman has competed in either event. Earlier this season, she placed fourth at both the Villanova Open in the 3,000 meter run (10:23.05) and in the 1,000 meter run (3:01.72) at the Lehigh Fast Times Meet.
Henderson is the first Lehigh track athlete to earn Rookie of the Week honors and Warning is the first male to take home a weekly award this season. Wright is the second female to win Field Athlete of the Week in 2015-16, joining teammate Courtney Avery who earned the award on Dec. 7.
Lehigh will host Lafayette this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rauch Fieldhouse in the school's annual dual meet.
