BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh softball program prepares for the rapidly approaching 2016 season, head coach Fran Troyan has announced the addition of five student-athletes who will join the Mountain Hawks in the fall. Lehigh's 2016 roster features five accomplished seniors which will leave big shoes to fill for the class of 2020 when they arrive on campus. The incoming class features one pitcher, one catcher, one outfielder and two infielders/utility players. Five states are represented in the class: Alabama, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington.
"When we are filling a recruiting class we are looking at the talents that the graduating class possess, the development of the returning players, and the overall recruiting needs of the program," Troyan said. "Lehigh's Class of 2016 is a daunting one to replace. In reviewing our needs we believed we needed to bring in a pitcher, a catcher, a couple of infielders and a power hitter regardless of position. We feel like the group that we have coming in will grow, like the group, they are replacing into an outstanding group. We are optimistic that this group will be able to ultimately fill some very big shoes."
The Mountain Hawks captured their league-best 13th Patriot League Tournament title in 2015 and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. Lehigh went 40-9 and won its first NCAA regional game in six years, defeating Central Arkansas in the NCAA Norman Regional. The Mountain Hawks return seven of their nine All-Patriot League selections from a season ago. Lehigh will begin preseason practice when the spring semester begins in late January. The Mountain Hawks will open the 2016 season at the UNCG Invitational, Feb. 26-28 in Greensboro, N.C.
