Second-half offensive surge not enough in 6-3 loss at Monmouth
9/4/2015 5:51:00 PM | Field Hockey
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - After struggling to muster much offense in the first half, the Lehigh field hockey offense came alive with three second-half goals, but it wasn't enough in a 6-3 loss at Monmouth on Friday afternoon. Senior Lindsey Schott, junior Gabby Tofig and freshman Lauren Dice all scored goals for the Mountain Hawks.
Â
"It was good to see the team fight for 70 minutes," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "We had some good goals. Zoey Pacheco, Kassidy Green, Lauren Dice, Erin Ricker and Gabby Tofig all had especially strong games. We needed to do a better job defensively. Monmouth was aggressive, quick and strong and at times, we let them use that to their advantage."
Â
Lehigh created the game's first penalty corner just over one minute into the game, but it was Monmouth who broke the ice at the 5:16 mark. Just under 15 minutes later, the Hawks made it 2-0 behind a deflection off a penalty corner. Monmouth held a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Â
Monmouth upped its lead to 3-0 just over seven minutes into the second half, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go away as Schott converted a rebound at 45:31 following a shot on goal from senior Zoey Pacheco.
Â
Monmouth answered with the next three goals, but Lehigh scored the game's final two goals to pull within 6-3 at the final horn. Tofig pulled the Mountain Hawks within 6-2 at 64:07, converting a pass from sophomore Jackie Renda. Dice added her first-career goal in the game's final minute to round out the scoring.
Â
Final shots were 20-9 in favor of Monmouth while the Hawks also held a 9-6 advantage. Junior goalie Julia Ward made six saves across Monmouth's Christen Piersanti made four stops.
Â
Lehigh will return to action at Columbia next Friday (Sept. 11) at Columbia. Gametime is set for 5 p.m.
