NEW YORK – The Lehigh field hockey team played neck-and-neck with Columbia, but it wasn't enough in a 3-1 defeat on Friday. After a scoreless first half, all four goals were scored in the second half, including a goal from junior Marissa Glatt that pulled the Mountain Hawks within 2-1 with 12:59 still remaining. Junior Julia Ward made seven saves in a strong effort in goal.
Â
"We waited too long before we started playing our game," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "Marissa Glatt, Kat Kneizys and Lauren Dice had strong games."
Â
A scoreless first half featured eight shots for Columbia and two for Lehigh with the Lions holding a 4-1 edge in shots on goal after 35 minutes of action. The game's first shot on goal came at the 13:20 mark, but Ward was there to make the stop. A pair of Mountain Hawks' defenders also made big first-half saves, senior Alex Beatson in the 16th minute and junior Kat Kneizys in the 30th minute. In between, Ward made her second save and Lehigh fired its first shot on goal, a Glatt opportunity at 26:04.
Â
Both offenses came alive in the second half, beginning with two straight goals from Columbia at 39:02 and 49:22. Lehigh wouldn't back down as Glatt scored her first goal of the season at the 57:01 mark, coming off a penalty corner. Junior Gabby Tofig assisted on the play.
Â
Lehigh looked to pull closer, but wasn't able to get off any additional shots. Columbia added an insurance goal at 65:16 for the 3-1 final.
Â
Final shots were 22-6 in favor of Columbia while the Lions held an 11-2 edge in penalty corners. Ward's seven saves came across Lions' goalie Kimberly Pianucci who made three.
