Strong start not enough in 4-2 loss at Towson

9/13/2015 4:53:00 PM | Field Hockey

TOWSON, Md. - The Lehigh field hockey team got off to a quick start, scoring two of the game's first three goals, but Towson responded with three unanswered goals to beat the Mountain Hawks 4-2 on Sunday. A pair of freshmen, Teresa Carotenuto and Isabel McKeown, scored their first-career goals in the defeat.

"We were playing really well as a team early on," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "We continued to take shots in the second half and their goalkeeper played well. The effort was there, but we did not stick to our game plan defensively."

Lehigh opened with the game's first three penalty corners, and shots. The Mountain Hawks' third shot beat Towson goalkeeper Megan Boyle at the 11:03 mark. Junior Gabby Tofig's initial shot was blocked, but she fed Carotenuto, who converted the ensuing shot to make it 1-0.

Towson responded with the tying goal 4:24 later on a strong rush to goal, but Lehigh answered less than ten minutes after that. Tofig fed McKeown on a breakaway in front of the goalie and the freshman made it count, making it 2-1 at 24:40.

The Tigers pulled even once again at 27:12 as a shot from the top of the circle found its way through traffic to tie the score at two heading into halftime.

Towson scored twice in the first 15:32 of the second half to take a 4-2 lead. Lehigh continued to fire shots, finishing with a 10-3 edge in that category over the final 35 minutes, but it wasn't enough. Boyle made six second-half saves to help preserve the Tigers' 4-2 victory.

Final shots were 19-13 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks had a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalie Julia Ward made four saves while Boyle finished with eight.

Lehigh now looks ahead to its Patriot League opener on Saturday as the Mountain Hawks host American at 11 a.m.
