Lehigh travels to Monmouth for Friday matchup

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a strong 3-1 home opening win over Davidson Sunday, the Lehigh field hockey team hits the road on Friday to face Monmouth at 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks were led by a balanced effort on Sunday, including three different goal scorers, a strong effort in goal and a big defensive save from sophomore Julia Washburn.

After a 3-0 defeat at Rider last Friday, junior Amanda Granger scored Lehigh's first goal of the season 7:06 into Sunday's contest. Classmate Gabby Tofig scored the second goal on a nifty tip of a Taylor Mygatt shot, while senior Lindsey Schott rounded out the Mountain Hawks' scoring behind a second-half penalty stroke. Davidson scored a goal with less than five minutes remaining with the game well in hand.

Three of Ward's five saves came in the final five minutes of the first half, helping her team go into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

Monmouth is 0-1 early in the season, dropping its opener at Bucknell 2-1. The Bison scored two first-half goals, then Monmouth responded with an Elyssa Okken goal at 47:07 off a rebound. Monmouth didn't allow a shot in the second half, but couldn't score the equalizer. Last season, the Hawks finished 13-8, winning the MAAC Championship and playing Princeton in an NCAA Play-In Game. Monmouth does lose its top two scorers from last year – Trish O'Dwyer tallied 53 points (18 goals, 17 assists) and Amanda Schoenfeld had 40 points (16 goals, eight assists). The team's third leading scorer, Meg Donahue, returns after 24 points a season ago (11 goals, two assists). Christen Piersanti returns after seeing the majority of action in goal, posting a 1.89 GAA and .697 save percentage during her freshman campaign.

The all-time series between Lehigh and Monmouth is tied at seven, including a 3-1 Monmouth victory last season. Monmouth won in 2013 (4-2), but the Mountain Hawks earned a 2-1 win in 2012.

After Friday's game, Lehigh will return to action at Columbia next Friday (Sept. 11) at Columbia. Gametime is set for 5 p.m.
