Mountain Hawks fall to Georgetown, 1-0

9/20/2015 2:18:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team outshot Georgetown 20-8 and held a 13-4 edge in penalty corners, but the Mountain Haws' offense couldn't break through in a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon. The Lehigh defense stood tall for a second straight game, allowing just one second-half shot. The Mountain Hawks only allowed 15 shots (nine shots on goal) over the 140 minutes of regulation this weekend.

Junior Marissa Glatt led Lehigh with seven shots on Sunday, six on goal, including a shot just 22 seconds into the game. However, Georgetown goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki was there to make her first of 13 saves. Lehigh goalie Julia Ward finished with four stops, with her first save coming at the 9:27 mark.

Later in the first half, Lehigh had some sustained pressure, beginning in the 27th minute with a shot on goal from Teresa Carotenuto. The freshman got off a high shot from a scramble in front, forcing Skonecki to make a glove save.

Just over one minute later, the Mountain Hawks fired two more shots on goal. That began a string of three penalty corners in near succession. One of the best chances came on a hard shot directly off a corner from Glatt, but Skonecki was there again to make the stop. Georgetown's Molly Thompson also made a big defensive save during that stretch.

Georgetown transitioned and within seconds after a Ward save, the Hoyas broke the scoreless deadlock. The ball was fed into the circle where Megan Parsons put the ball towards goal. Sam Hickey made a redirection past Ward to make it 1-0 at the 32:52 mark.

Lehigh held a dominant 11-1 edge in second-half shots, but couldn't break the scoreless drought. In the 41st minute, Skonecki was forced to make consecutive seconds, first on Glatt then on freshman Lauren Dicker on the rebound. The chances continued for the Mountain Hawks, who also finished with a 6-2 second-half edge in penalty corners, but it wasn't enough.

The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday when they travel to Bucknell for a Patriot League showdown. Gametime is set for 11 a.m.
